We live in Lawrence, Kansas and met Stella at the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church as we often visit Victoria. We treasure the years of our close friendship with Stella sharing interests in history, literature, travel and our love of Victoria. We talked often on the phone, wrote myriad letters, and delighted in having Afternoon Tea together. She was an exceptional person and her writing was magnificent! Stella loved that Jim, a Prof. of English at the University of Kansas, very much appreciated her writing. We were so pleased to help Stella celebrate her 100th Birthday at the Victoria Golf Club in October.

I never met Stella Higgins but learned about her through a Times Colonist article last June. Pedro Arrais, who wrote the story, was kind enough to connect me with Stella, and we exchanged emails over last summer. I was very interested to meet her as her husband and my father were both stationed at the same air base in England in World War II. For various reasons we could not get together. I had my dad’s log book and photo album to share with Stella. Even so, I received several really interesting emails from her, augmenting what the Times Colonist mentioned. I was so impressed with her ability, as a then 99 year old, to recall so many details. I truly appreciate even the little contact we had as it added much to the information I had from my father. Although I’m sorry we never met, I was glad to have even a brief contact with a seemingly wonderful lady.
