Predeceased by his father, Stefan, Steve will be deeply missed by his wife of 37 years, Elisabeth; children, Stephanie and Nicolas (Sonja); granddaughter, Ella; brother, Michael; mother, Fiona; and dog, Jojo.
Steve received his Bachelor and Master of Civil Engineering from Carleton University before moving to Vancouver in 1984, where he later received his designation as a Chartered Accountant. He worked for the BC Public Service for 32 years, most recently serving as the CFO for the Ministry of Finance before retiring in 2019.
A devoted husband and family man, Steve adored his wife and took joy in spending time with his kids.
He was intelligent, patient, humble, and a natural problem solver. He designed and built the family home and could often be found woodworking in the garage or tending to his garden. Steve loved to travel with his wife – and often in the company of good friends, Tim and Viki.
A heartfelt thank you to the nurses and doctors at Victoria Hospice and BC Cancer for the warm care Steve and his family received. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Agency or Victoria Hospice.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

David Hoadley I first met Steve in 1990. He was extremely humble, intelligent, and hard working.
He was very dedicated to his family. Steve had a great sense of humor. The world would be a better place with more people like Steve Klak and we are all diminished by his loss. My condolences to his family.

Ana and Dave It was with great sadness that we heard of Steve’s passing. Our condolences go out to his family at this heartbreaking time. He will be missed.

Brian Fraser I knew Steve for the entirety of his 32 years with the BC public service and considered him a very good friend. In the early days, we successfully completed the CA program together and in the later days were fellow CFOs, often connecting with our respective work efforts. Steve was excellent at his job and took it seriously. But I particularly enjoyed the flip-side of his character when he would demonstrate his great sense of humour. To the Klak family, I’m very sorry for your loss. I know you would have absolutely treasured him.

Peter Bourne I am shocked and saddened to hear of Steve’s passing. Steve and I worked together at the Auditor General of BC starting in 1987. I also saw him occasionally when he was at the Ministry of Finance. “The Klakster”, as he was affectionately known, was indeed a very “intelligent, patient, and humble” man. He had a dry sense of humour and was very well liked by all those around him. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Dara Landry I was saddened to hear of Steve’s passing. I worked with Steve from 2014 to 2017. He was a great mentor with his kind and caring manner in addition to his wealth of experience and knowledge. I particularly enjoyed our morning coffees where we talked about a range of subjects . His love of family, travelling, gardening, and woodworking was evident. My condolences to his wife and family.

Viki Anderson Steve’s love of family and travel are what I will remember most. His love of JoJo, his dog, was fairly high up that list as well. My husband and I will miss his laugh, his bright and curious mind and his respect for others. Travelling with Steve was so fun as he could hike up hills for hours, leaving us all in the dust. His love of mountains and taking pictures, “take it, take it, take it” will stay with me for many years. A lovely man with a close and loving family. He will be missed.
