On April 7 we had to say goodbye to a wonderful person.  Tom was 67, which was much too young, but apparently, cancer doesn’t care about age.

It’s hard to know where to start.  Tom was loved and respected by so many.  His family along with friends that span from his childhood in Prince Rupert to his time at UVic, Campbell River, until now in Victoria.

Tom was a carpenter and a natural teacher.  For him, teaching carpentry at Camosun was the perfect combination that created cherished friendships with colleagues and students alike.  The highlight of his career was being given the chance to teach apprentices with the Nuxalk Nation, a special connection that can not be broken.

Once Tom knew that his time was short, he got busy, visiting with family and calling as many friends as time would allow, always with a story and a laugh before saying goodbye. After that he was able to relax with his family around him and peacefully head off to his next adventure.  There to send him off were; Marie, his sons Nick and Alistair, his sister Alison, Penny, Graham and Katie.  His mum Fay, brother-in-law Don, daughter-in-law Alex, grandson Seamus, nieces, nephews as well as many friends were there in thought.

It was important to Tom that we thank all the exceptional doctors, nurses and care aides, especially:  Dr Galanos, Dr Geller, Dr Scott, Dr Cheek, Jay, Kevin and Alyssa.

Tom’s advice to all is: Follow your dreams, don’t be scared to try, and DON’T put off what you love… because sometimes time is shorter than you think!

We will love, miss and always hold you close!

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to help establish a bursary to commemorate Tom’s legacy.  The funds will be awarded to students who make contributions to others’ learning.  Remembering Tom Newton Legacy Fund https://gofund.me/dadf1952

To Tom:

A man came into our shadows, walked in our steps and embraced a whole new experience, he met the First people know as Nuxalkmc.
They opened their minds and extended their love and received a man with compassion, to teach, to mentor and to lead the way towards freedom for many Nuxalkmc people.
We hold you up and Thank you for lending this inspirational man.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Dear Newton family. We are so sad to hear of Tom’s passing. I taught with Tom at Carihi, and he was exactly as

described in his obituary. He was a skilled tradesman and teacher as well as kind and caring person. He leaves

behind many friends here in Campbell River.

    Dear Marie and family
We are so sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. Harrison always enjoyed his carpentry classes with
him. Most of his graduating class on their last day wore “crazy wool sweaters” in his honour, as he was affectionately known for his extensive sweater collection! Tom was a great teacher that won’t be forgotten.
Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
    Sincerely
Linda, Harrison and the Parker families
