With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mom, Virginia Joy Skillings. Mom passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospice on Tuesday, October 8, 2019.

She was deeply cherished and will be so very sadly missed by her children Sharon, Peter (Patti), Michael (Karen) and Gordon (Marion). Her 8 grandchildren held a very special place in her heart, along with her 2 great-grandchildren, and another on the way.

Nana made the best cookies ever and after a visit, you were pretty much guaranteed to be sent home with a full tin. She was a gracious hostess, known for putting on parties at a drop of the hat.

Family dinners followed by silly games were always special at Mom and Dad’s.

Joy was predeceased by her husband John in 2004, who was also her high school sweetheart, and our dad.

We would like to thank the staff at RHJ 5N and Victoria Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion they showed Joy in her final days.

“We’ll take care of the leaves Nana”

A Celebration of Joy’s Life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations made to the CNIB or Victoria Hospice would be greatly appreciated.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I am so very sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Both your mom and dad were such a large part of my parent’s lives, from high school onward. Your mom was great at keeping in touch with mine and continued to check in on her with regular phone calls. Those calls were always a bright spot for my mother.

My condolences to all of you on such a tremendous loss.

  • Dave & Susan Stevens

Our deepest sympathies to all of Joy’s family. The neighbourhood she and your family were a part of for so many years, some 62 now, is losing a piece of its soul with her passing. Having moved back to the area more recently, it was a special moment being able to share with Joy my very first memory of meeting her trick-or-treating at your front door soon after she and John arrived in their grand new house. I’ve never forgotten this nice and generous lady giving out the absolute biggest and best chocolate bars in the area. Funny how little kindnesses like that can stick with someone for a lifetime. It was wonderful for Susan and I to be able to get to know her again as new neighbours these many years later and be able to share many a warm laugh on numerous trips down memory lane. We will always fondly remember Joy, not the least every time we look out the window at your house or pass your place at Shawnigan.
