Kathleen Mary Laura Maki  (nee Lowry) passed away peacefully on November 25,2016 at the age of 92 in Victoria, B.C. at Glenwarren Lodge.

Kathleen was predeceased by her husband Bill, her father George and her mother Constance. She is survived by her daughters  Marion ( Ken) Hunter and Gail ( Jim) Maki Richards, her grandchildren Farrah (Al) Brind’ Amour, Keenan ( Shelley) Richards, Brian ( Shenan) Richards, her greatgrandchildren Grace, Ian, Joel and Brooklyn.

Kathleen was born on September 2,1924 in Victoria and attended Margaret Jenkins Elementary, St. Anne’s Academy and Victoria High School, where she was recognized for her athletic abilities. She joined the RCAF at the age of 18 and served for 4 years. She hopped on a freighter at 22 and headed to Europe for a year of adventure and worked in London at a Children’s Hospital. She returned to Victoria and worked as a dental assistant the Veterans’ Hospital.

She met and married Bill in 1954 and moved to live with him and his two daughters in Chase River. She was not a farm gal but adapted to country living, an instant family, also over the next 25 years, she had 56 foster children.

After Bill passed, she sold the farm and moved back to Victoria, the city she loved. She became an active volunteer at the nursery at Victoria General Hospital, the Cridge Day Care, and later with the older patients at the Jubilee Hospital and at Thrifty’s as a home shopper. She received a 25 year Service pin for her work at the hospital and was honored at Government House for her work. She loved to walk, play board games, her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s visits, her friends and her church activities.  She always was drawn to babies and often could be found chatting with them at parks or on walks. She made the best almond roca and ginger chocolates and applesauce.  She travelled to most continents and instilled the sense of adventure in her daughters.

The family would like to thank her friend Laurie Truant for all her support and help, Jo Barker for her wonderful care of mom and time spent each Friday, and the staff of Glenwarren Lodge for giving her a wonderful two years at their facility.
