August 11, 1955 – December 5, 2012

Loving father, son, brother, and friend. Passed away suddenly in Victoria on Wednesday, December 5. Predeceased by his mother and father, Pat leaves behind his son, Ross, family and friends. He was a man who loved the bounties that living on the Coast offers, including motorcycles, canoes, kayaks, hiking, fishing and the range. He had a wicked sense of humour and loved to laugh. His mission in life was to help people “have a spectacular day!”

A Memorial Reception will be held at McCall Bros. Family Centre, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Friday, December 14 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your charity of choice.  Condolences to the family may be offered below.

I have just found out about Pat’s passing and to say I am stunned is an understatement. When I moved to Victoria 20 years, I had the good fortune to get Pat to help me with my glasses. He always said that I taught him everything he knew about treating a person with Fibromyalgia. He was always patient. Pat was the only person I would let adjust my glasses. He was an expert.

My heart aches and to Pat’s son I express my deepest sympathy. Know that your father was a gentleman and a scholar and I will miss him dearly.

I am shocked and saddened by this news about Pat. He was such a competant man at his profession and greatly appreciated. He spoke often of his family and the fun times.
He was always so fair in his pricing and good to kids and teens needing glasses.
    Good by, fine fellow!

I am so very, very sorry to hear about Pat. I also was a client of his and was so happy and pleased with his service and knowledge of his profession. He really cared about finding just the right pair of glasses for you. That combined with his sense of humour made for a very pleasant appointment and I always felt I had visited a friend when I left. Peace be with you Pat and your family.

I can only echo what everyone else has already said about Pat. As a client over the past few years I always found him to be very personable and most professional. I would say he was most likely the best optician in town. He certainly provided outstanding service to all the personnel at CFB Esquimalt. I always marvelled at his weekend adventures: the long hikes, dragon boating, kayaking, etc., and looked forward to the next instalment when I was next in his shop. Like the rest of us I am shocked by his untimely death.

My husband and I were planning to drop in on Pat this morning for a repair job and an adjustment when I suddenly felt a need to call first. The telephone message disturbed me so much that we headed straight over to the Mayfair Optometric Clinic where we gently told the very sad and upsetting news of Pat’s passing.
We were two of Pat’s clients for over 20 years and each time we went to see him it felt more like a visit with a good friend.
I, too, am sure that he will be watching over his beloved son.

In the brief time Pat graced us with his presence he touched many hearts with his kind nature and ready smile. We miss him but are grateful for the time shared. Thank you Pat.

I was a client and friend of Pat since moving to Victoria almost twenty years ago. Once we discovered we had boys close in age, we would spend much of our “eyeglass” time talking about them with the pride that all dads have. Of couse, it was our favourite subject!

Pat made sure that visits never seemed like business with his perfect blend of professionalism, respect and relentless humour. Sincere condolences to his family. He will certainly be missed!

Ross, I have never had the pleasure of meeting you, but feel like I know you. Your dad was always so proud of you, always talking about you and his eyes would light up at the sound of your name. I offer you my sincere condolences in this most difficult time. You have the best guardian angel anyone could want. Your dad always had stories to tell and a joke we could enjoy. Treasure the good memories Ross.

  • Don Taylor (father of Dr. Stephen Taylor)

I am very sorry to hear of Pat’s sudden passing. He was in practice with my son for several years before branching out on his own. He was thoroughly professional, and had a ready smile and a quick wit. My condolences to his family and close friends.

We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Pat’s death. He was such a nice man. We always enjoyed coming into his shop and kibitzing with him while he filled our eye-glass prescriptions.

He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

My sincere sympathy. Pat was a wonderful man, so kind and a thorough professional. I was a client for many years, and he was always so cheerful, even though my prescription was a difficult one, and meant a lot of extra work for him.

  • Susan

    Ross,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your father was a man of such diversity, openness and warmth. We talked about everything from my eye care needs to motorcycles. I will always remember his enthusiasm as he talked about shopping for a bike with you.

  • Jim and Ann-Marie Millington

We would like to offer our sincere condolences for your loss. Pat was an amazing, caring and funny man. We were blessed to be both his clients and his friend over the years. He was always willing to help people, and truly made a difference in our lives, and many others in our community. Every time we were around Pat, he had only the most amazing stories about his family and especially about his love and pride for Ross.
There are no words that can take away the grief that you will go through. However, please know that you have many people praying for your healing and for your strength during this difficult time.
We will miss Pat very much, and trust that he is watching over us.
    Blessings,
    Jim and Ann-Marie Millington
