Denyse Dora Mathew

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Denyse Dora Mathew, who succumbed to cancer on October 25th, 2014.

Born in Clermont, Quebec, and determined to make a life for herself, Denyse moved to Val-d’Or where she met and married Antonio Tomei, in 1956. Later she would move to Manitouwadge, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta, raising a happy family with Antonio and building a career as a banker at CIBC.  In 2012, she was excited to move to Victoria for what she described as her latest adventure.

Denyse was an enigma; on one hand, she could create a feast from a stewing chicken and on the other hand, she loved fine linens, art, classical music, travel and the grace of a well-crafted piece of furniture. Denyse was a loving mother, doting grandmother and a loyal friend.

Left to mourn her loss are her children, Angie (Sid) Rashbrook, Leandro (Karen) Tomei and Luisa Tomei; her grandchildren, Janice (Trevor), Matthew (Nancy), Adrian, Daniela, Nicolas and great-grandson, Liam.

Denyse was predeceased by her husband, Antonio Tomei in 1990, second husband, Jack Mathew in 2009 and her brother, Rejean Chouinard in 2010.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation in her honour to the charity of your choosing.

A prayer service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 680 Courtney Street, Victoria, B.C. Reception to follow.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  2. To Denyse’s family:
My deepest condolences to all of you in the loss of your dear mother and grandmother. What a huge, premature loss for you……. and for her friends too, especially the Edmonton ones who knew and loved her for many years. I so enjoyed her presence and great sense of fun and optimism; she is already missed by all who knew her.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time – may you find peace.
    Love, Mary

  3. Our Deepest Condolences to my brother Trevor and his wife Janice and Janice’s family on the recent loss of their Mother/Grandmother Denyse. Although we did not know Denyse well, she gave a great first impression. Denyse was a very pleasant and out going lady that loved her family dearly. She will surely be missed. Our hearts go out to you Janice on the loss of your Grandmother. May time be able to heal your pain and replace it with all the long lasting memories. Again our Deepest Condolences to you and your family. Guy, Wendy, Kyle and Erika Manderson.

  4. Dear Family of Denyse,
I am shocked and saddened at Denyse’s passing and hasten to send my sincere sympathy to you and yours.
I met Denye at kirk and we have had some special friendship- times together. We discovered we both enjoyed rabbit and were planning a rabbit stew luncheon party for our friends. She will be greatly missed.
I am so sorry I can’t attend her celebration of life, as I have a stall at a Christmas Fair, selling my baking on the 1st November. Please know that I shall be there in spirit.
    Sincere condolences,
    Blessings
