February 20, 1928 – May 19, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce thekatahanas-younger-web passing of our beloved mother, Eleni H. Katahanas on May 19th, 2015 at the age of 87.  She is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Antonio Katahanas.  In Canada, she is survived by her daughters, Angela (Bruno) and Effy (Greg); grandchildren Antonnia, Zinnia, and Nevio.  Born in Lesvos, Greece, Eleni left her entire family and immigrated to Prince Rupert Canada to marry her husband and start her own family.  She settled in and adapted to the new culture, learning the English language and the Canadian culture and customs.  In 1978, the entire family moved to Victoria, BC where Eleni worked for the Empress Hotel for 15 years.  With a twinkle in her eye and a willingness to always help out, Eleni won numerous service awards.  Retirement did not stop her and her desire to be of service.  Yaiyai (grandmother) was never happier than when she was caring for her grandbabies or in her kitchen, cooking Greek delicacies and family favorite traditional recipes to feed her family.  Eleni lived a full life and with love and dedication, she achieved the dreams and goals she set for herself as a young girl in Greece.   We would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of Mt.Tolmie Hospital for the exceptional care, support and love they provided for the last four years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C.  Private family ceremony.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Dear Angie,
So very sorry to hear about your dear sweet mother. Tetley and I loved to visit her so much. Watching that precious smile come to her face meant so much. We also love you and were especially thankful on days when you were there too. We will miss your mom and those special moments of joy with her and you. God bless you.

Angela and Effy, I know how deeply you loved your mom and how hard you worked to keep her well and happy during these last difficult years. You will think of her often as you see her reflected in your children–and your mirrors! I hope for you that the pain will subside and only happy memories will stay with you forever.

Bruno, Greg and kids, this is a difficult loss for you as well, but I bet there will be days when you’ll see Eleni clearly living on in her daughters!

    Ann
