With love and regret, we wish to share the passing of Gunter Carl Schmidt on October 17th, 2015. Gunter was born in Ostfriesland, Germany on July 22, 1930. He had a drive for success, and there wasn’t much room for opportunity in Germany after the war, so he left everything behind and headed for Canada. In April of 1958, he married the love of this life, Ann. Together they built businesses and most importantly a family, and the success he was looking for was found in both. We will remember his love of friends and family, sense of loyalty, enjoyment of babies, great sense of humor and his prowess behind a barbeque and an accordion. And we will always be able to hear his voice saying “let’s go, let’s go” and “the wurst is yet to come”.
He is survived by Ann, his wife of 57 years, daughters, Audrey Swap (David), Toni Lachance (Lenard) and Carol Schmidt (Dan Shantz) and grandchildren, LeAn Sorensen (Simon), Cori Swap (Ryan Douglas), Jeremiah Swap, Brandon Lachance (Chonticha) and Terry Lachance and brother Alfred. There was a special place in his heart for his great grandchildren, Josiah Loyie, Gus and Scarlet Sorensen and Ara and Ayla Douglas. He was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Gerhardine, and siblings Heintz, Frieda and Erika.
A private family gathering in Gunter’s honour will be held at a later date.
Donations to the Alzheimer Society of BC or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
