On behalf of the Chinese Canadian Military Museum in Vancouver, we extend our deepest condolences to Sammy’s family and friends. He served Canada in the Second World War at a time when Chinese Canadians were not allowed to vote; where subjected to a federal exclusion act; could not buy property anywhere they wished; and were forbidden to practice critical professions such as law, engineering and medicine. Because of men like Sammy — who were willing to sacrifice their lives for Canada — all Chinese Canadians were finally granted the rights of full citizenship in 1947. Thank you Sammy, for your contribution to our community and Canadian history.

    Dear Joeline,
We all know that endings are inevitable, yet when they happen, we are all once again sadly diminished. I never thought of you both without remembering especially Sammy’s smile that crinkled his eyes and lit up his face. He is deeply missed. My thoughts are with you and your family.
    Sincerely,
    Phon.

I considered Sam one of my best friends. We met many years ago at the Victoria YMCA; we would see each other on the treadmill first thing in the morning. We chatted about World affairs, our families and silly things too. We laughed so hard at times, but no one ever complained. On the contrary people would stop by to speak with Sam and ask what was making us laugh so hard. We had fun.

As most of us knew; Sam and Joeline tended an amazing vegetable garden in their backyard; many of us were beneficiaries of their amazing produce. Sam and Joeline were so generous to us in everything they did. I also had many homemade soups by Joeline.

Sam would often ask why he lived so long. One of the reasons I gave to him was for others to experience his beautiful nature and to know we too could be a caring, compassionate, generous and understanding person as he was. Another reason was to interact with his several relatives and their younger generations. Also he came to experience both the beauty of this World and sometimes its harsh side.

I witnessed amazing love and respect from so many towards Sam and Joeline. Although it is difficult to maintain the standards of love and generosity of this beautiful couple; we will continue to try.

Sam is not gone; he is in our hearts, and Joeline continues to be our earthly friend.

My heartfelt sympathy to Sam and Joeline’s son, Esmund and his partner Margaret and grandkids Samantha and Benjamin.
