“Absent from The Body Present with the Lord”

Dorothy was born in Lethbridge AB,  August 08, 1923; promoted to Glory, June 23, 2018. Mom was the 1st born of five and as a young teen left the frigid climate of Alberta for Burnaby, BC with her family. She happened to have a handsome young neighbor who asked her to an Air Force dance.  Shortly after, they were married on October 17, 1942. They didn’t hesitate to have what turned out to be a large family of a son then 6 daughters, which translated into 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Life was not easy for our parents and money was scarce but we had the stability of knowing we had loving parents who shared their love of family, opera (Dad was Lead Baritone for the Vancouver Opera Society), fishing, Mom’s famous spaghetti and their great friends.

Mom was a devoted Christian and spent hours studying her bible. She was the great influence that saw most of her children accept the Lord. She was Mom to many especially to her daughter-in-law, Judy.

We want to extend a heartfelt Thank you to the loving staff at Saanich Peninsula Extended Care Hospital.  You were God’s gift to Mom.

A Graveside Service and Interment will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 1:00 pm in the Royal Oak Burial Park with a Memorial Celebration to follow at 2:00 pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  • GAIL AUGUST

Last week, John Ellis phoned to tell me that his sister Dorothy had died. I was not totally unprepared but I was very sad as Dorothy held a special place in my heart.
Over the years of knowing John, I heard many stories about Dorothy – not only was Dorothy his sister but she was like a “second mother”. I can easily count the times I spent with Dorothy (not many – in fact, very few) but the stories I heard and listened to could fill a book. As I heard it, life in the Miller household was lively, warm, kind, intelligent and embracing. It offered up respite and welcome to many, including my beloved John.
My everlasting memory of Dorothy will be her honesty and frankness with me in all my conversations with her. She answered my questions with magnificent and illuminating forthrightness.
This week, I will write a memorial note to Dorothy, to be placed in a bottle and introduced to the Pacific Ocean – I will pay my respects with all my heart. My image of Dorothy is a woman of strength and beauty, a mother to many, an artist, a woman who understood life’s complexities and challenges.
Rest in peace dear Dorothy – your place at the elder’s table is secured.

Sending our love and thoughts to all the Miller Family and their spouses. I go a long way back with Walter and Dorothy. First at Queen Mary School and than later on in life. Dorothy had a very kind heart. She sent a pair of Becky’s shoes to school knowing that I had big holes in mine. They came to our Wedding, which Walter sang as a gift to us. Rest in Peace sweet lady.
Thinking of you all…. Diane Robbie, Keri and Bob Mitchell
