February 7, 1924 - August 21, 2018

Our family wishes to express our sorrow for the loss of our dear father, grandfather and great grandad.  Bob died peacefully at home surrounded by many family.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Ruth and Andrew Hosie.  Predeceased by his wife Margaret in 2014, siblings Art and Eleanor, and his grandson Scott Stone.  He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jill (Bill) Ross, Judie (Jim Stone), Tom, Jane (Jamie) Papp, Rob (Brenda); grandchildren, Evan, Jane, Mac, Camille, Anna, Molly, Kate, Sophie, Alex, Caleb, David; 11 great-grandchildren; nephews, Andy, Andrew, Robert, David; nieces, Patti, Pam, Hope, Tracey.

We are forever thankful to have had such a kind, gentle and caring mentor in our lives for so many years.  His strength, compassion, independence, grace, wit, intelligence, integrity, patience and acceptance were an example to us all and made him an amazing figure who will continue to give us high goals to strive for.  Up until the day of his death, he enjoyed bridge, book club, coffee mornings with an exercise group, Wednesday pub lunches with longtime friends, as well as many precious times with family.

He is a veteran of World War II, during which he developed enormous compassion for others.  He is remembered as a gentleman and role model surgeon.  His leisure activities included sailing, golf, woodworking, outdoor pursuits, and eating cookies and ice cream.

Until his last day, his wit, intelligence, insight and concern for others were the Dad and Grandad we celebrate and respect.  We have memories to cherish forever.

The family would like to thank Dr. MacNaughton for the care and friendship provided to dad.

A Service will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Knox Presbyterian Church, 2964 Richmond Road, Victoria, BC.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  1. Bob and his family were so good to me during my time in Victoria. He was a role model as I pursued a career in surgery. I know he lived a great life and will be remembered for the wonderful individual he was; his progeny carry his legacy on.
    Hugs to all Hosies!!

  2. I am so sorry to hear of Dr Hosie’s passing. In 1980 I was a rotating intern at the Royal Jubilee and his example of gracious intelligence and warm patience have always stayed with me. He was an exemplary mentor for me and just hearing his name lit up my day. Forty years later I still feel the same.

  3. The Bob Hosie Family,

So very sorry to hear of Bob’s passing.
My deepest sympathy to the family.

  4. I became a regular visitor to the Hosie house when I was 15 years old. I will always remember Dr. Hosie’s calm and attentive manner. He made me feel welcome, he always had time to chat, never seemed to be in a hurry. I feel fortunate to have met him. Thanks Bob.
Jill, Judy, Tom, Jane, Rob and families, our love to you all.

  5. Dr. Hosie was one of my mentors when I was an intern at St. Joseph’s Hospital 1971-2 and continued to be a source of advice after internship. He was always patient and considerate, an excellent surgeon and role model who made medicine a more enjoyable profession to follow. So sorry to hear of his passing.

  6. Such sad news! I first got to know Bob at Henderson Fitness Centre many years ago. My wife, Chris, who knew him through social events at H.F.C., dearly loved Bob’s company and shares my sense of sorrow at his passing. Bob was a wonderful gentleman, in the broadest sense of the word. He was loved and respected by all his friends at the Centre who enjoyed his great sense of humour and upbeat personality. He will be greatly missed!

Condolences to Bob’s family which must be incredibly proud of him.

  7. To the Hosie family: I first met Dr. Hosie when I was an OR nursing student. He was unfailingly patient, kind, understanding and helpful as I struggled through learning how to scrub. He saved me more than a few nervous tears! Then I worked as an RN on 3 Royal and later became the head nurse. There was no one with a better bedside manner. His patients trusted him implicitly and I am sure that was a big factor in recovery. He treated nurses with respect and equality, enjoyed the teaching role, and we all had the utmost respect for him in return. When interns came to the unit I used to advise them that if they modeled themselves after Dr.Hosie they would not only be great surgeons, they would be great physicians. He was an icon in Victoria surgical services, it was an honour to have worked with him, and he is very fondly remembered. My sincere condolences to his family. Jan Elliott.

  8. Dear Hosie family, I read your father’s obituary yesterday, you described him well. I lived across the street from you on Redwood Dr. with my parents Ray and Eileen Langdon. You were young children and I was one of your babysitters.
In later years I graduated from RJH as an R.N. Your father always acknowledged me and frequently asked about my family. He was a well respected and very fine man, please accept my condolences.
    Carol
