Donald Barrington “Barry” Camp

October 9, 1929 – January 6, 2019

October 9, 1929 – January 6, 2019

Barry passed away peacefully at home in Victoria following a short illness.  He is survived by his wife, Irene; daughters, Casey (Robert), Beth (Steven) and Pat (Dave) and his 7 grandchildren, Sarah, Adam, Robyn, Jenny, Katy, Holly and Nate.

Barry grew up in London, Ontario and during his youth made lifetime friends, most notably Stuart Weir and Ted Garside, into whose homes Barry was welcomed and loved. As a young man, Barry joined the Canadian Navy, after which he completed his undergraduate degree at Acadia University.  Barry and Irene met in Rochester, New York where Barry was a graduate student and Irene was a visiting operating room nurse.  Barry often commented that he approached her in the cafeteria one day when he saw her pull out a pack of Canadian cigarettes. Barry and Irene married in 1959, lived in Ontario and then subsequently moved, with their three daughters, to Victoria in 1966. After a 2-year stint of teaching at St. Michael’s University School, “Mr. Camp” then enjoyed many years as a science teacher and school librarian at Victoria High School. Some of his former students remain in contact to this day. He retired in 1990. Throughout his life, he was always active outdoors with a special love of sailing, cycling and birdwatching and enjoyed long cruises in the Salish Sea, either solo, or in the company of others, especially his dear friend, Joe Andrews.  Barry has friends from coast to coast, and will be sorely missed.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful care by Dr. Jennifer Lush and the Victoria Hospice Society.

No service by request.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Expressions of sympathy could be shown with a donation to Wild ARC.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Bravo Zulu, Barry.

  1. We have fond memories of Barry cycling down our road on his way to somewhere. He and his family were part of our wonderful Kingsley St. extended family. We wish (very belatedly) Irene, Casey, Beth, Pat, and all the other treasured family members the happiest memories of the life they shared with Barry.

  2. Aunt Lil and family, very sorry to receive the news of Uncle Barry’s passing. Sincere condolences from Catherine and I – our thoughts are with you. Take care, Steve

  3. I am so sorry to hear that Barry has passed away.
I met him at Royal Victoria where in the 90’s he
would drive me to China town so I could get Chinese
sausage. I am from the US and the Canadian brand
is very superior and at times difficult to find in
Seattle. We used to call each other on our
birthdays. What a charming and sweet thing
to do. One day he brought some scones to our
Boat that Irene had made along with some amazing
blackberry jam. What a treat as we crossed the Strait.
Barry, may the wind be always at your back.
