Leung, Cynthia Sue Ching (nee Der) passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, at Victoria General Hospital. Born April 30, 1934, in Victoria BC, Cynthia was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Peter in May 2017. She is survived by her children Cary, Steven (Patricia), and Darlene (Randy). Her loving grandchildren, Brandon, Leanne, Jordan (Olivia), Karsen (Sarah), Jarryd (Rachel), Nathan (Amy) and Tamiya (Geoff) and recent great grandchild, Jorgie. As well, predeceased by her father Jong Fook (Johnnie) Der, Mother Rose (nee Chue), sisters Jennie, Helen, Annie, Sue, Barbara, Doreen, and brothers Walter, Thomas, and Reginald. She leaves behind sisters Gwen and Dayanna (Jase), sister-in-law Reta Der and many nieces and nephews and their families from the Der family.
Cynthia grew up in Victoria’s Chinatown and attended school at North Ward Elementary and Victoria High School. She was a hard worker helping the family’s dry-cleaning business get off the ground in the early years. Then she moved on to her father’s business, Capital Freightways and worked there for many years. She enjoyed dancing and would never turn down a night out with Dad and friends to dance the night away. She also enjoyed travelling and visiting many countries with Dad and friends. Their favourite destination was Hawaii, traveling there yearly and sitting on the beaches of Waikiki and Fort DeRussy drinking gin and tonics and mai tais. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and was very involved in their upbringing. She loved watching them play sports and cheered them on mightily. She loved her extended family, and her best buddies were her sisters. The Der family recently had a family reunion, and she was absolutely thrilled to see family members that she had not seen in many years.

Cathy CLACKSON I have know the Leong family since I was in grade 3. Let’s just say that’s 50 years plus. The things I loved about the Leong family was their warm family home on Townley St. Their famous Chinese food was so delicious! I also worked for their dry cleaners which taught me a great deal at the age of 11-14! What I remember most is the presence of Mr and Mrs at every sporting event! Volleyball and basketball games they never missed! They then supported hockey and lacrosse! So proud of their children and their grand children. You never met and more lovely lady than Mrs. Leong! You were truly loved by your family and friends! Say hi to my Mom and brother! RIP!

Cary, Steven and Darlene –
Your Mom was special in so many ways, as seen in the moving condolences in this obituary.
We loved our visits to Victoria as kids – visiting her and Uncle Peter and taking part in the Leung side get togethers on the Island.
And I am so glad Darlene was able to arrange for Bennett and I to visit Auntie Cyn more recently, which was very special.
You are in our thoughts at this difficult time,
Carol, Lester and Michael
