With heavy but grateful hearts, we announce the passing of Cyril Nasim in his beloved Victoria home, surrounded by his precious family.
Cyril was born in Gujrat, Pakistan in 1933, and immigrated to Canada in 1962 to complete a Ph.D. at the University of Saskatchewan. After following his supervisor to Trent University, he met the love of his life, Moira, in 1964, and they soon married. Cyril and Moira moved to Calgary where Cyril taught mathematics at the University of Calgary for 31 years and latterly at the University of Victoria. He was a well-loved professor and a respected colleague.
Cyril was a gentleman and a gentle man. He was a humble soul who eschewed any attention brought upon himself. All who knew and loved Cyril describe him as a fine man, with a kind heart, and sharp mind. In his own quiet way, Cyril committed himself to helping others, whether it was volunteering at First Metropolitan United Church, Our Place, or Habitat for Humanity. In his spare time during his long retirement in Victoria, he tended his beautiful garden and enjoyed golfing, reading, Sudokus, crosswords, and especially walking anywhere near the ocean.
Cyril is survived by three sisters, two brothers, and their families, all of whom adored and admired him. He loved his family beyond measure and will be sadly missed by his siblings, wife of 59 years, three children and their partners, and five grandchildren. All will miss his enduring and tender love, not to mention his famous chicken curry.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on June 6, 2026, at 2:00pm.

Jim and Joan Stewart From the moment we encountered Cyril and Moira in the summer of 1980 in California, we knew we had met lifelong friends. Cyril and Jim were both on sabbatical at UCSB, and had plenty to talk about. His dry wit and infectious humour were a delight. We were so pleased to have had the opportunity to visit in Victoria in 2025. Although he was starting to show signs of decline, he still had plenty of stories to share and his special curry chicken dinner was excellent.
Along with countless others, we’ll miss him and wish him well on his final journey.May he rest in peace.

Joan Mason and Larry Elford Dear Moira and family,
It was with a heavy heart that we heard that Cyril had passed away. We remember fondly our many dinners at the JBI, New Year’s Eve parties at your house, and on and on. Cyril was such a lovely, gentle man who quietly gave his time at Epiphany Explorations, at Our Place and at numerous events at the church. He will be remembered for for his friendship, his gentle self-deprecating humor and his love of his family.

Laura Bell My deepest sympathy to the Nasim family. My heart goes out to you all. Cyril was a great man, wonderful husband and father. I remember fondly summers heading to their cabin in the back of his truck for vacations, with his daughter and my lifelong friend, Bonnie. He will be missed by all that had the pleasure to know him. Love, Laura Bell

Dear Moira, Elena, Bonnie, Chris and families,
I am so sorry to hear of Cyril’s passing – my heart goes out to your entire family. Although I hadn’t seen him for many years now, I have many wonderful memories of visiting with him as a teen in the kitchen while he made his amazing chicken dish – he was always lovely to chat with. He was a very kind, gentle soul who imparted these qualities on those around him.
I hope many wonderful memories of him and the love he had for you help you all through this very difficult time. ❤️
