Jean-Baptiste (aka Papa/Tonton/Mr. Q, Grandpére) passed away with family by his side at Saanich Peninsula Hospital.
Our family is, again, indebted to the professionalism and kindness of the Extended Care Unit staff for the year Jean-Baptiste lived in their excellent care.
Jean-Baptiste is predeceased by Hanne, his beloved wife of 61years, his siblings Denise, Yvon, Guitic, Bernard, Francois and Anne-Marie.
Papa leaves behind two sons, Christophe and Noah; Daughter-in-Law Jenise, and grandchildren Wyatt, Henri and Mya and also many cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada and in France.
Jean-Baptiste Marie Quillévéré was born January 8th, 1936 in Brittany, France, the youngest child of Yves and Margueritte Quillévéré. Jean-Baptiste immigrated to Canada at 19 to work and continue his studies at Victoria College and UBC where he met the love of his life and soon began his career as a Social Worker in the Emergency Department of Royal Jubilee Hospital. Papa and Maman raised their sons on Chandler Avenue in Victoria, BC. Jean-Baptiste also taught night school French at the University of Victoria.
“They say you can’t take it with you
but I think that they’re wrong
‘cause all I know is
I woke up this morning
and something big was gone.”
from Terry’s Song,
by Bruce Springsteen.
We will continue to cherish our Papa for his ability to connect with people, his kindness and absurdist humour, his love of languages, lyrics, music, theatre and movies and especially the visual arts and artists themselves. Among his inspirations were Rodin, Matisse, Chagal, Modigliani, Klee, Miro, Gaugin, Van Gogh and local hero Emily Carr.
Also, Papa was inclined to offer copies of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince to loved ones on several occasions.
Jean-Baptiste, Son, Brother, Uncle, Co-Worker, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Neighbour and Friend, will be remembered with joy.
A memorial will be held on Saturday May 23, 2026 at 2:00 pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC.
