Paul was born and grew up in Winnipeg, with his parents, Anne and Bruce Sutherland.
He started his career with Tourism, Manitoba, and then shifted to the automotive business as a distributor for General Motors. He later moved to Calgary, in the same business for Mercedes Benz and later, Porsche/Audi. He met and married Stephanie Mawer there on December 14, 1973.
Paul’s next move was to Distillers (Canada) United Distillers Canada Inc., before moving to Victoria, BC. Among other business activities Paul accepted a position representing Kicking Horse Coffee, where he helped to get the brand established on Vancouver Island.
Sadly, Stephanie passed away on October 21, 2013, leaving a large void in Paul’s life.
Paul is survived by his daughter, Tracey Carr (Dennis), three grandchildren, Landyn, Colton (Kaitlyn), Hannah, and great-granddaughter, Celia. In addition, he is survived by his son, Todd, (Heidi) and grandchildren Noah and Grace.
Paul’s activities included fine dining, sailing, cars in general, and he enjoyed following racing, such as NASCAR and F1.
Paul and his family would like to thank the long list of medical-related practitioners who assisted him during his last ten plus years while physically compromised. These include; Dr. T. Rosenberg, VIHA, his physiotherapists, and Care and Company (Reena and Vaclav, among others – who were responsible for his daily care)
In addition, Paul would like to thank his loyal friends for visiting him regularly when he was confined to his bed.
Paul declined any type of service but would ask you to consider donating to a cancer research organization and/or a local palliative care unit.
As Paul would say, “Cheers! And Bon Appetit! I have had a good life.”
Condolences and memories may be offered to the family below.
