It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doug. He was the beloved husband of Jill, Dad to Shannon and Steve (Megan), and Grandad to Teagan and Charlie. Doug was born and raised in Calgary Alberta, attended Bowness High School and the University of Calgary where he studied physical education. He worked for 40+ years in construction as a tile contractor both in Calgary and Victoria.

Doug’s interests were wide-ranging and he went “all in” in everything he did.

Doug was both athletic and a sports enthusiast, and he followed his favorite teams over the years. He played hockey and stayed connected with his teammates even after he stopped playing. He also loved golf, walking his dog(s) and other outdoor pursuits. He was a dedicated coach in hockey, softball, and soccer for both boys and girls, and maintained contact with several of the players throughout his life.

Doug loved music and played guitar and sang with many individuals and groups. He wrote numerous songs which he published. He loved motorcycles and rode on adventures both solo and with friends. He enjoyed travel, and was a lifelong learner, particularly in music, politics, science, and history.

Doug was a caring, fun-loving person who took joy in the everyday activities of his life. Above all he loved his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He often said how fortunate he felt with his life, even when facing health challenges.

Doug had a positive impact on those around him and he will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

A celebration of life will be held on July 5 from 2 – 4 pm at Cedar Hill Golf Course. Please RSVP to Jill, Shannon, or Steve if you plan to attend.

Words fail me. My heart and soul ache for you and all Doug’s loved ones. I was diagnosed with cancer before Doug and he was unfailingly kind and thoughtful and helpful and a stalwart supporter as he took over my role in the band and became a true friend. Doug had a gift for friendship among his many other talents and I and all of us miss him greatly, as you know best. If it’s okay with you, I would like to attend and help celebrate a tremendous life well lived and well loved. – Steve Zio, June 13, 2026

Doug was one of a kind! Our paths crossed around the time he started getting in music and he definitely went ‘all in’, even building a recording studio in his basement. We would have long chats about the state of the music industry and how every guitar player we played with wanted to be the loudest in the band. His songs were written from the heart and were about the people he loved the most, his family. One thing most people don’t get to hold on to is someone’s voice, and Doug’s will be there for us to listen to whenever we need it. I’ll miss making music with you chief!

    To Jill and Family,
We were very sad to hear about the passing of Doug.
He will be remembered with respect and affection for his kindness, generous spirit, and the positive impact he had on those who knew him.

I will always remember Doug as my older, “big boy” cousin, who was unfailingly kind to his younger girl cousin. Jeff has fond memories of attending the University of Calgary with Doug, and the friendship they shared during those years.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May cherished memories of him bring comfort and strength in the days ahead, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

Sincerely, Jean (Kosak) and Jeff Hugill
