Martha Dosso (nee Sawatzky) passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, at the age of 95, with her loving family at her side.
Martha was born May 26, 1931, on a farm near Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where she grew up in a family of eight children. Her first eight grades of schooling were in the one room rural Peel Schoolhouse. She attended high school in Swift Current, commuting by horse and buggy, then completed a three-year program at Swift Current Bible School before entering Nursing School in Moose Jaw. She completed her RN diploma as top of her class and valedictorian and was awarded a scholarship to the Nurses Teaching Program at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and upon completion, she taught at the Moose Jaw Union Nursing School.
In 1956, Martha married Harry Dosso, at the time a graduate student in physics at the University of British Columbia. Martha worked as a nurse at Vancouver General Hospital while Harry completed his studies, then the couple moved to Victoria in 1957 where Harry took a position at Victoria College, which later became the University of Victoria. Martha taught nursing students at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Victoria until she and Harry started their family, with four children born between 1958 and 1962.
Martha was a kind and devoted wife and mother, dearly loved by her family. She was a wonderful cook with a gift for hospitality and loved to welcome family and friends to her home and dinner table—she leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and delicious recipes. Throughout the years, Martha and Harry faithfully attended Central Baptist Church in Victoria, where she taught Sunday School and served in the Nursery for 45 years, as well as many other roles.
Martha is survived by her children Lorna, Stan (Shelley), Ken (Frances), and Joan; by her grandchildren Jill (Matt), Andrew, Michael (Jennifer), Megan (Andrew), Daniel, David (Vanessa), and Mark; by her great grandchildren Oscar, Mae, Soren, Martin, and Owen; and by her sister Matilda (Lional). She is predeceased by her husband Harry and by siblings Margaret (Henry), Erna, Hedy (Paul), John (Lena), Ernest (Carol), and Freda (Tony).
The family thanks the caring staff at Kiwanis Pavilion. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, June 28, at Central Baptist Church, 833 Pandora Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Baptist Church in memory of Martha Dosso. Funds can be given at the service, by mail to the church, or by email to giving@centralbaptistchurch.ca.
