Ian Douglas Izard, K.C. passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family and loved ones on September 8, 2026, at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife Daphne, his children Sasha (Yana), Diana (Sean), Matthew and Mandy, as well as his two cherished grandchildren Iris and Fern.
Born on April 15, 1948, in Victoria, to Alan Patrick and Elizabeth Izard (nee Angus), Ian was one of seven children, predeceased by his brother, Andrew. He developed a lifelong passion for fishing and philanthropy, and he loved to speak about it with anyone who would listen.
Ian attended St Michael’s University School and graduated from Oak Bay High School, UVIC and UBC. He practiced law for more than 35 years, both in private practice and as Law Clerk and Clerk Assistant of the Legislative Assembly. Outside of his career, Ian will be remembered for his commitment to volunteerism and belief in the lasting benefits of a permanent endowment for the community of Victoria and its many organizations. He has held a number of community positions including Honorary Governor and former chair of the board of the Victoria Foundation, President of the Goldstream Volunteer Salmonid Enhancement Association (GVSEA), Honorary Solicitor of the Association of Former MLAs of British Columbia, and member of the Thermopylae Club of Victoria.
After retirement, Ian enjoyed annual fishing trips to Kyuquot Sound, and prawning in Saanich Inlet on his beloved boat, Decorum. Ian and Daphne could often be found at home, where he enjoyed hosting family BBQs surrounded by his treasured rhododendrons, fragrant roses and rustic vegetable garden.
As per his request, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be considered to the GVSEA and Victoria Hospice.

Daphne and family, my thoughts are with you. Ian always had a wave and a smile when we bumped into each other walking the neighborhood. His legacy of service is exceptional.
Ian was a treasured shipmate of the Thermopylae Club. Our Purser for many years, Ian also hosted members aboard Decorum for our annual day cruise.
We will sound the ship’s bell and have a minute of silence for Ian at our next meeting.
Dear Daphne: I was so shocked to read about Ian’s passing. I have known Ian since the mid 1970’s. Ian was kind, warm and a very genuine person. Bob and I think of Ian when we see our front doors every day – the ones carved by Roy Vickers. His contributions to the Victoria Foundation and to many other organizations will live on. It is with great sadness that I learn of Ian’s passing. He was so full of life and a true friend. More than anything I will remember his integrity and his love of truth and honour. Very sorry for your loss Daphne. I knew Ian through the Victoria Foundation. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to sit with him and you at the Vital Youth event this spring. As a founder of Victoria’s Vital Youth program, I’m glad he was able to speak at this year’s event. He’s left a great legacy and will be missed. My thoughts are with you and your family.

The “pool ladies” have also missed you and were just talking again about you at lunch on Tuesday. I told them about my search for your telephone number to no avail.
I am so sorry to read that Ian has passed. I always enjoyed my chats with him at the pool. Did he ever write a recipe book?
