Maxine passed away peacefully in the early hours of September 14, 2026, at the age of 99. She was born in Swan River Manitoba on a farm with her eight sisters and brothers. Her parents Archie and Jenny Johnston passed away early in her life and so she found herself following her sister Jean to Victoria, B.C. Sisters Muriel, Pearl, Anne, Phyllis, Pauline and Jean as well as brothers Lyle and Willard all passed away before her.
Maxine worked at Resthaven Lodge when she first arrived in Victoria. Once established, she started ‘on the job’ training to be a Dental Assistant with Dr. Grant and then continued with Dr. Miles and finally with Dr. Arne Lane before retiring.
Predeceasing her in 2024 was her loving husband, Elmer. After they were married in 1953, they bought a brand-new house together on Veda Place and lived there happily for 70 years. Both were avid gardeners and had an extensive veggie garden. They even got a few veggies after the deer and raccoons were finished taking their share. Maxine was an amazing baker and made the best apple pies.
When Maxine met Elmer, she was welcomed into the Curtis family with open arms, and she was very happy to be part of a family again. The family had a cabin at Shawnigan Lake for many years, and she enjoyed so many summers with sisters-in-law Evelyn and Lilian and their families. Everyone especially enjoyed Sunday dinners around the picnic table.
Maxine was a loving and supportive Mom and Grandma. She was always thankful for the support she received as she got older when it wasn’t easy to do everything herself. She was also very wise and kind to everyone.
Maxine spent the last few months of her life at Sidney All Care and the family would like to thank all the amazing staff for their care of our mother.
She leaves behind her daughter Gail (John) Sutherland, son Greg (Shannon) Curtis, granddaughters Kristy (Terence) Prince and Alisha Curtis as well as great-grandson Franklin Prince. Her love will live on with us forever.
A Celebration of her life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, B.C., on October 29th, 2026, at 2:00pm.
