October 29, 1933 – October 10, 2026

Raymond Fredrick Shillington passed away suddenly on October 10, 2026, just 19 days short of his 93rd birthday.

Born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Ray grew up in the area with his seven siblings, spending his boyhood helping out on the family farm. He later moved to Saskatoon, where he met Marilyn while they were both working at the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. They married in 1954 and began building their life together, raising four sons. Their journey took them from Saskatoon to Edmonton and eventually to Victoria, British Columbia, in 1968, where they made their home for many years.

Ray worked as a stereotyper at the Victoria Times Colonist until his retirement in 1993. Retirement brought many happy years for Ray and Marilyn, including trips to Yuma, Arizona, and Hawaii, where they enjoyed travelling and making memories together.

Ray was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marilyn, in 2007, and their son David in 1979. Although his sons eventually moved away from Victoria, Ray remained close to his family and cherished his relationships with Terry (Karen), Doug (Marie), and Jeff (Carol).

Ray had a great sense of humour and enjoyed a good laugh. A devoted Toronto Blue Jays fan, he was also a passionate hockey fan who loved the Edmonton Oilers. He faithfully followed both his teams through the good times and the bad. He also took up golf, developing lasting friendships with the members of his Royal Oak golf group. It was through golf that he met Morene, who became an important part of his life. They shared the last 18 years together, enjoying each other’s company and making many happy memories.

Even as his health deteriorated, Ray’s sense of humour remained with him. During the last two months of his life at Oakwood long-term care home, he continued to try to keep things lighthearted with the caring staff who looked after him. His ability to find moments of humour, even during difficult times, was a reflection of the spirit he carried throughout his life.

One of Ray’s greatest joys was being Grandpa to Andrea (Brahim), Brett (Lucy), Trevor (Olivia), Saskia, and James. He was immensely proud of his growing family and especially delighted in being Great-Grandpa to Noah, Ayah, Cole, Brie, Rory, and Rowan.

Ray will be remembered for his love of family, his wonderful sense of humour, his enduring friendships, and his enjoyment of playing golf and watching baseball and hockey. He leaves behind a family who will miss him dearly and who will carry his memory forward for generations to come.

A private family burial will be held.
