Bernice Aylward

1935 – 2026

1935 – 2026

With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Bernice May Aylward (née “Aylward”), who took her final bow — unafraid and with an open heart — surrounded by her loving children on October 28, 2026, at the age of 91. A woman of extraordinary beauty, strength, and grace, she lived a full life as a force of nature — unyielding, loving, and unforgettable.

Born in 1935 in Falmouth Nova Scotia from humble beginnings during the Great Depression, Bernice built a life of devotion – above all to her immediate family, her countless friends both in Nova Scotia and in BC, and as an Operating Room Charge Nurse for almost 40 years at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria BC; she was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt and wife to the late Robert Aylward (Bob), her husband of 53 years, and a proud and guiding mother to her children Rick and Barbara and a generous compassionate friend to many.

Whether in retirement when she was travelling the world with her beloved Bob, beating her defenceless opponents in bridge or helping to save lives in the hospital Mom lived generously, fully and always with love.

Bernice is pre-deceased by her loving husband Bob in 2012, brother Donald in 2006 and brother Lionel in 2016. She is survived by her children, Rick (Terri, granddaughter Olivia), Barbara (Robert) and honorary children Melody Davidson and Terry Wallner adopted in her heart, along with her Nova Scotia family sister-in-law Susan, nephew John (Brenda & family), niece Kim (Roger & family), nephew Doug (Tammy & family) and John Brownless (Linda & family).

She leaves behind an incomparable legacy. Thanks for everything Mom – always loved, never to be forgotten.

The family held a private graveside service on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date where friends can gather and toast our beautiful mom.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.
