Percy Poulton – VE7AGN
Born April 28, 1920 in Grand Forks, BC. Dad passed away peacefully on September 14, 2009 at Sunrise in Victoria after a long journey with Alzheimers. Predeceased by his wife, Doreen in 2002, survived and missed by his daughters, Ann (Rick) Paisley of New Westminster and Wendy of Victoria. Also sadly missed by Debby, his caring friend and the Sunrise staff. Dad moved to Victoria and graduated from Victoria High School in 1938. He joined the navy as a radio operator. Being out of uniform, wearing roller skates, kept him from going overseas! After marrying Doreen and a stint of Motel (Penticton) and Lodge (Moose Horn Lodge, Burns Lake) ownership, they returned to Victoria where he worked at HMCS Dockyard. In 1959 he finished his B.Ed at UBC. He taught for many years at Colquitz Junior High School. Dad operated a ham radio from the age of 18 (VE7AGN) and roller and ice skated until recently. He was an Honorary Life Member of Victoria Figure Skating Club. Thank you to the 3rd floor staff at Sunrise for your kindness and caring and to Debby for your love and loyalty.

In lieu of lowers, a donation in Percy’s memory would be appreciated to the charity of your choice. No service by request.

I am a former student of your Dad’s from the early 1970s, he was my Grade 8 math teacher. He was a wonderful man and just as wonderful as a teacher. I remember how hard he tried with me, it was hard when math wasn’t my best subject. I’ll always remember how patient he was, making sure I understood what he was teaching. I’ve often thought of him in years later and wondered how he was. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing, he was a really great person.
I’m sorry I didn’t post this sooner, I’d lost my husband earlier this year. I know how you feel. I just had to express my condolences about your Dad.
    Sincerely Sydney Wilson (nee MacKenzie)

I made mistakes in the first one – please disregard it.

In December when we ladies from the Victoria Figure Skating Club have our Christmas luncheon, at my place, we will have a special glass of wine and remember Percy’s life – especially his skating life. He was a good friend to all of us. Family please accept our condolences.

I remember Percy well from when I first started working as a cashier at the Crystal Pool in 1981. Percy was a door man, and was so welcoming, helpful, and such a wonderful conversationalist. It was an honour to have him touch my life. I offer my sincerest condolences to the family.

I am a former student of colquitz era 1967 to 1970.
He was one of those amazing teachers who leaves an imprint well past the time school is over.
My sympathy to the family, who has lost an amazing individual.

I was one of Mr. Poulton’s students in Colquitz Junior High School, somewhere between 1961 – 1963 and what a wonderful teacher he was. He even took the pointer stick to me one day for passing notes and I adored him. He was always approachable and helpful with a friendly demeanor. I was able to reconnect with him at the Crystal Ice Rink one day. He was figure skating or speed skating, I can’t remember but it was a delight to see him again after so many years. I wish all the family my humblest of condolences and sympathy.

    With sincere regards,
    Wendy

    Dear Ann and Wendy,

My thoughts are with you at this time of sorrow. I knew your Dad from Colquitz High School. He and your Mother attended my Wedding (1972) and I saw them from time to time at Scotia Bank (National Trust) and that is where I also met you too. I am no longer living in Victoria but have moved to Powell River so if you ever come up this way do let me know and I would be pleased to see you.

    Sincerely, Diane

I figure skated with Percy many years ago (in the 70’s when I was a teenager). Percy was such a wonderful man, such a gentleman. I remember skating at the old Memorial Arena and dancing around the arena with Percy to the Fox Trot and Vienese Waltz. I always wondered what ever happened to Percy, and although it’s said that he has passed, I’m happy to hear that he lived a good long life. I’ll miss him and always have good memories of him on the ice at Memorial!
