Died peacefully on November 8, 2010 in Victoria, BC. He was born in Victoria on July 11, 1917 to parents, George and Isabella Main, their first child born after immigrating from Scotland. Lloyd was predeceased by brothers, George, William, Alexander and Thomas and sisters, Elspeth, Isabelle and Madelina. Lloyd will be sorely missed by his family, his wife of 64 years, Margaret; his children, Laureen Evans (Dan, Chris and Mike); Trish Main (Barry, Allison and Kathleen Hammell); Marian Kirk (Roger, Bryannie and Jillian) and Don Main (Mckenzie and Kennedy) and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many good friends. Lloyd attended Cloverdale Elementary School, Mt. View High School, Craigdarroch (McGill University) and Victoria Normal School. During the war years, he joined the military and went to Yarrows to assist with ship building of which he was very proud. Returning to school at war’s end, he graduated in education from the University of British Columbia. He began his exemplary teaching career in the Peace River country, returning to Victoria to marry, raise a family and continue his career. Lloyd was principal of numerous Victoria elementary schools: Gordon Head, View Royal, North Ward, Lampson Street, Sir James Douglas, Willows and Doncaster. He loved weekend golfing at Uplands and a round at St. Andrews was a highlight. Lloyd was active in the community, serving as an elder at First United Church, with the Music Festival Society, being a Free Mason, playing and watching sports and in later years, holding court at Tim Horton’s. If you needed a lift, Lloyd would have a joke and words of encouragement at the ready. A son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, educator, golfer, bridge player, gardener and sports enthusiast, Lloyd always put people before things or institutions. To the end, he spoke to everyone, no matter their condition, position or manner. As an educator, he touched the lives of many. If he taught you, he likely remembered your name just as he remembered the many colleagues with whom he worked. He always said that teaching was about people and he made sure he knew them all. The last months of Lloyd’s life were spent at Mt. Tolmie Hospital. A special thank you to all those who showed such great care and compassion towards Lloyd and his family.
A service in memory of Lloyd will be held in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets on Friday, November 26 at 3:00 PM. A reception will follow in the McCall’s Family Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a youth charity of your choice. Condolences for the family may be offered at www.mccallbros.com

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I always looked forward to him coming into the bank-he was always ready with a joke and his grin would light up the room. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time

Dear Margaret and Family
We send our heartfelt sympathy to you at this sad time. Lloyd has touched many people in his life and we were blessed to be among those he touched.
I always knew when Lloyd had been in to see Don at the office as Don would come home with Lloyd jokes to share.
I shall treasure forever the memory of Lloyd and Margaret’s gracious hospitality. We had moved to Victoria in July and I started work at Doncaster with Lloyd as my principal. At our staff Christmas lunch Lloyd extended an invitation to drop by his house over the holiday so on New Years Day, Don and I and three little ones phoned to say we would like to drop by. Lloyd said come right over and so we did. We had a lovely time but many years later it occurred to me that perhaps Margaret and Lloyd had been up a lot later than us the night before as we had the little children and were in bed early and of course their children were grown up. However it was they made us feel very welcome and it was a marvelous occasion for newcomers to Victoria.
We will hold Margaret and family in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Margaret and your lovely family,
We are deeply saddened, but so very happy that we had the privilege to have gained such memorable friends. You have brought us so much laughter with terrific jokes. Rooms light up when you walk through the door! And I especially appreciated your following me around as I entertained in various seniors’ facilities! True “groupies” you are! and a huge boost to my self-confidence!
We are all better people for having known dear Lloyd – if even for just a short while!
Love to you,
Bette & Dick
Lloyd will be greatly missed. He was always so interested in others and was so enthusiastic about life. My heart goes out to you all.
All who knew Lloyd as an educator and friend will have a grand store of wonderful memories of a very fine man. The way his always welcoming grin would widen into a beaming smile of recognition was a gift from his generous nature.
I’m sorry not to be able to attend the celebration of his life as a recent bout of bronchitis has left me with a very disruptive bark that would only be intrusive.
You surely will have a wonderful store of fine memories – savour them.
Please accept my condolences for your loss. I was in a pool rehab class at Gordon Head with Lloyd for two years after my motorcycle accident. Over that period of time there were many days I was not feeling well physically or mentally. Lloyd had an uplifting attitude that helped me get through those days. I really looked forward to seeing him. A few times after I was no longer attending the program I went to the pool for a visit with him and his attitude never changed. He really made a difference in this world and particularly with me. I will never forget him. We need more people like him. He will be missed.
Thanks for all your help Lloyd, Lothar Christians
