Born July 23, 1925 in Hamiota, MB, Leonard (Len) passed away peacefully on August 31, 2012 at Broadmead Lodge, Victoria BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Stewart and Emma, and older brother, Cam. He is survived by Fran, his loving wife of 64 years; brother Keith (Fran); children, Doug (Bev) and Jim (Wanda); grandchildren Dave (Tara), Jennifer (Todd); Mark (Linda), Niel (Jen) and Jeff (Katie); and great grandchildren, Devon and Kaylee Pickell, Jack, Nicholas, and Sarah Buchholzer, Imajyn Pickell, and Elanah and Israel Pickell.

After serving in the navy during the war, Len married Fran Collins in Brandon MB. In 1959, they moved to Flin Flon, where Len managed the local Liquor Commission until 1985. Len was a well respected and involved community member, particularly with the Sea Cadets and Kinsmen. Like his father, he loved the outdoors, especially being at their cottage and pickerel fishing on Lake Athapap, MB, and returned there each year after retiring to Victoria, BC. Len was a character – strong, determined, and used to being in charge – but under that seemingly tough exterior, he won countless hearts with his gentle warmth- a generous spirit, quick witted sense of humour, and mischievous smile. He made the world a better place, especially for those who truly knew him. He will be greatly missed and cherished forever in many hearts.

A private celebration of life will be held for Len. Thanks to all who helped care for Len in the past few years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Broadmead Care Society, 4579 Chatterton Way, Victoria, BC, V8X 4Y7 or to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences for the family may be offered below.

    Dear Fran and family,
I was saddened to learn of Len’s recent passing. I remember your family from ‘back in the day’ when Len and my late husband Mel worked together in Brandon at the Liquor Store on 7th Street and Pacific Avenue, until your move to Flin Flon. Many enjoyable times were had with the Liquor Store ‘family’ through the years! May your memories bring you comfort at this time. I hope it helps somewhat to know that others are keeping you close in thought.
    Kindest personal regards,
    Irene (Brandon, Manitoba)

So sorry to hear of Len’s passing.I have many memories of a good neighbor.

  • Cheryl Stewart (Kirby)

I read Len’s obituary in the Brandon Sun and immediately phoned my Dad (Geoff Kirby). Dad and Mom often talked about “Len and Fran” and I met them also at Liquor Store functions. Mom and Dad also retired to B.C. Mom has since passed but Dad is living in Oak Bay Lodge in Victoria. My sister Elaine lives in Victoria and my brother Brent on Pender Island (in the house Dad built). Dad was sad to hear about Len and I am sure he will remember lots of great times they all had.

Hi. Just read in the Brandon Sun of Len’s passing. So sorry to hear of it.
I often wondered where you two had retired too. See where it is Victoria.
I still remember babysitting Doug & Jim for you when they were young fellows.
I’m sure you’ll have many loving memories of Family times through the years that will help with the sadness you feel at this time.
    With deepest sympathy.
