Four generations of the McCall family have compassionately attended to the funeral needs of Greater Victoria since David M. McCall and James M. McCall founded McCall Bros. Funeral Directors in 1921. This enduring legacy stands as a testament to the McCall family's resilience and compassionate ethos, where each generation dutifully succeeded the previous one in supporting Victoria's grieving community for over a century.
A Legacy of Care Since 1921
McCall Gardens began as McCall Bros. Funeral Directors Ltd in downtown Victoria, founded in 1921. It started with the purchase of an 1884 heritage home, originally built by pioneer JH Todd, and later owned by community leader Lee Mong Kow. This home was transformed into a first-class funeral facility and landscaped across the street with what became known as McCall Gardens.
In 1960, second-generation owners Torrey and Graham McCall built a new, modern funeral home designed by architect John Di Castri. It became the largest independent funeral home in B.C. at the time.
David McCall, Graham’s son, became President in 1977. He later acquired property on Falaise Drive, adjacent to Royal Oak Burial Park, foreseeing the need for future relocation. In 1998, he built a small funeral home there, named Sequoia Gardens.
By 2014, David and his son Trevor decided to consolidate and modernize operations. In 2016, they opened a new, state-of-the-art funeral home and event centre on the Falaise property, merging both locations under the new name: McCall Gardens.
Today, led by fourth-generation President Trevor McCall, the family continues to serve the community with compassion, evolving with the times while honouring their legacy.
