Agnes Florence Butterfield, 85, passed peacefully in her sleep at Hospice on October 8, 2013. Born August 23, 1928 in Victoria, BC, she was the oldest child and only daughter of the late Thomas and Elsie Rowbottom. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Butterfield in 1995 and her brother, Fred Rowbottom (Myrna) in 2010. She is survived by her four children, Wayne (Dianne), Arlene (Bruce Flesjer), Douglas and Spike; foster son, Fred Hansen; her three brothers, Tom, George (Wilma) and Doug (Sandra); her sister-in-law, Louise Walton; her five grandchildren, Rob, Angel (Philip Schwemler), Briar (Ed Burman), Katie (Bruno Weber) and Carly (Justin Hann); her seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and great nephews.

Agnes was an avid and magnificent gardener and loving homemaker. When her children were grown, she started her career in housekeeping at the Embassy Inn in Victoria and rose to the Head of Housekeeping some years prior to her retirement thirteen years later in 1996. She loved to play bridge and was a member of Silver Threads for eighteen years. She loved dogs with Standard Poodles being her favorite. She enjoyed travelling, taking her grandchildren to Disneyland and was a great travel companion. A self actuated individual, she taught herself how to repair upholstery, do carpentry, how to fix all the kids bicycles, sew, crochet and knit, hand crafting many beautiful sweaters and blankets for all her grandchildren. She loved to read, do crossword puzzles and would converse easily with family, friends and strangers. With her inquiring mind and great interest in people, she would engage the most reticent individuals into lively discussions. Mothering was her natural calling and she was The Rock standing solidly at the center of her family of four generations. A resourceful, prudent and intelligent woman, she could always make “a little” go a long way. Agnes was a strong woman who made wise decisions that had long term benefits for her whole family. She will be missed so very much by all of us who will always love her.

A Memorial Service will be held at McCall’s Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, in Victoria, B.C. at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2013. This will be followed by a reception at the Embassy Inn, 520 Menzies Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations in memory of Agnes to the Victoria Hospice Society. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

My deepest sympathy to the family.

I was so deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Agnes and will always hold a special place in my heart for her. I remember the good times working along side of her at the Embassy Inn in the early 80’s until her retirement.

She was indeed the kindest person that one would ever want to meet. I will miss her visits to the front desk to chat with me.

    God speed my dear Agnes
