We weren’t related, but Alice was a part of our family too. Twenty years ago, my sisters and I asked Alice to pop in occasionally to look in on our parents, Mack and Biddy Spring, when they first entered the world of elder care, at The Victorian in Gordon Head. It didn’t take long for us all to understand that Alice was someone very special. Mack and Biddy loved her… for her humour, her obvious care for them, for her kindness, and amazing ability to help them find their way to the best quality of life they could at each stage of their declining health. For the rest of their lives, Alice was with them nearly every day. Not only was she their friend, but their problem solver, their advocate. And Alice was a wonderful communicator. She kept all us sisters apprised of Mack and Biddy’s needs, joys and sorrows. She was creative in her relationships, joyful and unfailingly kind. So much did we all trust here, that we asked their care homes to consider Alice a member of our family, and gave her authority to speak on our behalf.

Alice continued to be our friend long after Mack and Biddy passed. She was a lovely woman, and we all miss her.

Over the years, Alice and I have kept in touch through emails. We shared lots of great jokes, stories and family history. She often went to visit my parents, Alex and Agnes Poulsen, her aunt and uncle. She loved my mom and said she was her favourite aunt but she probably said that about a lot of her aunts. Alice and I were in the same swim class at Elk Lake put on by the Times-Colonist paper. We both were so anxious to pass so we could have more freedom when we went to Beacher Bay for all the Poulsen clan picnics. Our families spent lots of time together when we were kids. Alice was always kind and thoughtful. She will be missed by many. Rest in peace, my dear cousin. We all loved you! Your cousins, Marge Mitchell and Anita King.

Goodbye dear Cousin, I appreciated all the times you took to contact and look in on our Poulsen elders. Time tends to pass us by too fast and we regret what we haven’t done or wish we could do over. Keeping a closer contact with my many cousins is definitely now on my to do list. You,my dear, will be sorely missed by many and loved by many more. Rest in peace. Love Cousin Bonnie xo
