Anne-Marie (“Annie”) Sampaoli-Cavazzoni, our Mutti, slipped away peacefully on December 11, 2012 – rejoining her beloved husband, and our Papa’, Enzo after a three month separation. Born in Marseille (France) on May 26, 1938, Annie quickly distinguished herself through her extraordinary intellect and outer beauty – but more importantly through her inner beauty. At the age of seventeen, prior to her Law studies, Annie met the love of her life, Enzo. Together they embarked on an incredible fifty-seven year love story that unfolded in four countries: Provo (Utah, United States), Pegli, Martina Franca, Spoleto and Milano (Italy), Grono (Switzerland), Montreal and Victoria (Canada). This unique global adventure was not always easy, and Mutti was the “glue” that kept the Cavazzoni family unit together – providing love, reassurance, comfort and care for her three children. Annie dedicated her life to them and, in doing so, she not only prepared them for successful lives, but also introduced them to life’s essence and beauty, including literature, music and art. Our “finestra sul mondo” (window to the world), as Enzo used to call her. Struck by multiple sclerosis (MS) at age thirty-seven, Annie began a thirty-seven year battle with the progressive disease. Yet it is during this time, in the face of eventual unspeakable suffering, that her greatest contributions to our world occurred. Anyone who had the opportunity to come in contact with Annie was touched by her true courage, faith, kindness, love and ever-present dignity.

In the end her wish was for her beloved Enzo to come and take her with him – so that they could once again hold hands together. Annie is survived by her children Patrizia, Christiana and Marco, son-in-law Mark, daughter-in-law Diane, grand children Sarah, Darcy, Alex, Margot and Isabel, her sister Mitzi, brother-in-law Gigi and her nephews Umberto, Maurizio, Guido and niece Emanuela. Words cannot describe our emptiness and sorrow. Mutti, “ti adoriamo, e i tuoi piccini saranno sempre con te”. Enjoy heaven with Papa’, you’ve both earned it! The Cavazzoni family would like to thank Dr. Rosenberg and the WeCare staff for their incredible professionalism, support and compassion. A huge debt of gratitude to Klara for fulfilling her promise to Annie to be “there until the end” and allowing her dignity and respect in her final moments.

A memorial service will take place in Victoria BC in the spring. Donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada are appreciated. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Tony and I extend our heartfelt condolences. Your mother was a truly remarkable woman who bore her many years of suffering with great courage and dignity. The last few months without Enzo by her side must have been immensely hard for her. Our deepest sympathy goes to all the family.

  • R Brown

I am sorry to hear of your loss. The death of a loved one is one of the most devastating experiences a human can face. At times, the loss can seem unbearable. The Bible promises: “God is near to those broken at heart.” It also says; “Throw your burden upon God himself and he himself will sustain you.” (Psalm 34;18 and 55;22) I hope this message will help you cope with the loss of your loved one.
