It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anna-Maria whom we fondly call Annie. She will be deeply missed by her loving and devoted husband David, her cherished siblings Grace (Terry), Joey (Cris), Reggie, Romy, Tony (Jo-an predeceased), beloved Christian (nephew), CJ (niece) and Cedric (nephew).

Annie graduated with honours from The Michener Institute in Toronto, Canada. She spent most of her professional career as a medical technologist in Microbiology at LifeLabs where she was truly happy with, and grateful to her wonderful colleagues.

Annie’s deep devotion and faith to her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ were a constant source of love, comfort and strength, especially during her courageous battle with cancer.

Annie was a ray of sunshine to everyone she met. Her infectious laughter was a joy to hear. Her pragmatic approach to life was inspiring, and her remarkable ability to quickly solve word puzzles was impressive. Her vast wealth of information makes her a valuable resource which she was privileged to share with others.

Annie’s passing leaves a tremendous void in the lives of not just her family but also her extended family circle (uncles and aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces), her special and dear friends, neighbours, and colleagues and her Christian brethren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Annie and her family are grateful to the Royal Jubilee Hospital – the Palliative Care Unit and the Victoria Hospice health care teams for their compassion, dedication, and professionalism.

Those who wish to offer condolences or share memories with her family may do so online at McCall Gardens Funeral & Cremation Service – mccallgardens.com where loved ones from near and far can come together to celebrate her life.

In honour of Annie’s wishes, a private family funeral and a green burial will take place.

Friends and family are invited to join a celebration of Annie’s life on June 27, 2026 at 2:00 pm to be held at McCall Gardens located at 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria.

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15 (KJV)

I worked with Annie at LifeLabs but had moved on to Island Health in 2004 and lost touch. I remembered her as kind, full of joy and always with a beaming smile. I reconnected when she was in the hospital and she was the same wonderful person I remembered.

Sending my sincere condolences to David, Grace and the rest of her extensive family.

  • Jim Stearne

I hope that it brings comfort to those closest to Annie, to know that she brought energy and inspiration to all that knew her. We all face challenges in life and when I think of Annie,  I know that her influence still inspires me to meet those challenges, whatever they may be. I worked with Annie for many years and if Annie was there when we arrived for work, it was always a good day for myself and everyone in the lab . She will always be fondly remembered.

  • Millie and Norman Morgan

Annie was our friend for many, many years. We will remember her bright smile, her intelligence and her kind and gentle ways. Through her professional work, she made a valuable contribution to her adopted country – and we should be glad that she chose to come to Canada! She was a good citizen, a righteous person and our cherished friend. Our sincerest condolences go out to her husband David, Grace and all the Frias family.

  • Kristy

Annie was a coworker of mine and I will never forget her light, and how it shined on everyone around her. I was lucky to know her, and she inspires me to be a better human.

Annie and I began working in Microbiology the same year. She was always a pleasure to work with: a warm, kind and thoughtful person whose smile could light up a room. Her optimistic and enthusiastic approach to life was still evident in my last conversation with her. Annie’s courage, strength and faith were an inspiration and she will be missed.

My sincere condolences to you, David, and to all of the family.

    Dearest Annie,
Even in the swiftness of your departure, your incredible grace, strength, and unmistakable sense of humor still shine so brightly. Only you could make me smile amidst such heartache with your joke about being the ‘absentee host beaming from heaven.’
I am so grateful for the years we shared at Micro. Looking back at our time working together, those memories are filled with so much light. You approached this final year with the exact same courage and dignity I always admired in you, bringing people together for one last ‘Micro reunion’ just as only you could.
The world feels less bright without you here, Annie. But as we gather to celebrate your life, I find true peace knowing you are now free, resting in the comforting and gentle embrace of heaven.
Thank you for your warmth, your laughter, and for being such a beautiful light in my life. You are missed deeply.
To Annie’s husband David, sister Grace and family,
Please accept my deepest condolences for your profound loss.

My heartfelt condolences to David and Frias family. It was a privilege to have known (Ate) Annie. Although our time together was brief, the encounter we shared many years ago was sufficient to reveal her inner and outer beauty. I regret not having had the opportunity to appreciate her more fully in this life. Rest in peace Annie and enter eternal bliss, free from suffering. You are now at home with our Lord Jesus, beholding His glory!

  • Susan and Ross Holloway

Ross and I are sending our deepest condolences and sympathies to David, Grace and all Annie’s family at this sad time.
Annie was so special to all with her wonderful smile, sense of humour, caring attitude, knowledge of history and last but not least her ability to whiz through those Crosswords, Suduko and Wonderword puzzles all the while engaging with others over coffee! Over the past year we have enjoyed many lovely chats on the phone and so many laughs and chuckles. Her acceptance of her situation was beyond admirable helped by her strong belief in the Lord God. May he keep her at peace and let her light shine down on her Celebration of Life tomorrow. We will love you always Annie.

  • Kristina Lee

Annie was the first trainer I was given when I began my position in microbiology at Lifelabs. My past experiences were not micro related but rather a distant memory from college. She was very patient, caring, knowledgeable and kind with a laughter and smile that helped me grow professionally and personally. Her persona was large yet quiet and never wavered from loving, day to day no matter what the situation was. She hugged me one day and told me I was an exceptional person. I’ll not forget that day. I am sorry I couldn’t be there to say goodbye and especially thank you for her acceptance. She will be missed and fondly remembered.

    Dear Annie,

Thank you for reconnecting with me in 2020 when my twin sister, Belle, passed away. Your kind words about Belle made me realize that she was also someone important to you.

Our talks about Belle started the renewal of our friendship.

Our email exchanges made me very happy especially when we were writing about our furry babies…..Knuckles and Banjo…..and Brusco and Pepay. I would always look forward to your replies after sending you stories, pictures and videos of B&P. We definitely had something in common and I loved it!

I will surely miss you, Annie, very much!

To dear David, Joey and Grace, I can’t thank you enough for sending me updates about Annie. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Our deepest sympathies from the Morelos family to yours….

Annie, my hubby’s sister-in-law and mine, too. I never met her face-to-face. However, we both have written letters and made called to each other through the years. Annie’s sunny personality, vibrant attitude, and deep fath in Jesus are inspiring and worth remembering. I/We thank God for your life, Annie. In life and in death, you are a blessing. See you in the morning!

I’ve learned so much from you, Annie. You will be deeply missed.
