January 17, 1918 – July 18, 2011

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Antonio Basile Katahanas at the age of 93. ln Canada, he is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Eleni; his daughters, Angela (Bruno) and Effy (Greg); his grandchildren, Antonnia, Zinnia and Nevio and nephew, Vasilis Antoniadis. Born in Lesvos, Greece, Antonio left his home at the age of 16 in search of a better life for himself and his future family. Along the way, he encountered many trials, tribulations and adventures. He fought on the frontlines during WWII, as well as in the Greek Civil War where he was imprisoned for his political beliefs. With the end of the Civil war, he went on to serve in the Greek Merchant Marine affording him the opportunity to see much of the world. He chose to settle in Canada in 1959, starting in Montreal. Working his way across the country, he eventually settled in Prince Rupert where he started his retail business, got married and began to raise his family. Retiring in Victoria in 1978, he built his dream home where he spent hours cultivating his garden of many vegetables and fruit trees. A man of few words, he firmly believed that actions spoke louder. He lived a healthy, full life with honesty, conviction, and perseverance. We would like to express sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for the loving care and support they provided Antonio and his family. His greatest joy was his family who will miss him dearly as will his surviving relatives and friends in Canada, Greece and the United States.
