It is with deep sadness that the family of Arthur Rudolph Mebs announces the passing of our dear father on November 18, 2009. Art was predeceased by Phyllis, his wife of 64 years, in 2006, but is survived by his children Gail (Donald) Lucas of Victoria, Grant (Sandra) Mebs of Vancouver, and Gordon (Roberta) Mebs of Qualicum Beach. He will also be fondly remembered as a much-loved Grandpa by his grandchildren (Jennifer, Jeff, Christopher, Stephen, Kyle, and Taylor) and by 6 great-grandchildren. His gregarious, feisty spirit left all of us with numerous stories that will be passed on with laughter to succeeding generations!
Art was born in Lemberg, Saskatchewan in 1919, and grew up a true Saskatchewan farm boy. After schooling and chores, he still managed to find time for hockey and baseball, as well as playing guitar with the local country and western band. Once WW II was declared, he made his way to Vancouver to enlist with the RCNVR. He then sent for his hometown sweetheart, Phyllis Luscombe, to travel to Victoria, where they married in 1942. Phyllis remained in Victoria while Art was on North Atlantic convoy duty, until a long stint in hospital in Ireland ended his wartime service. Following the war, Art and Phyllis joined numerous other young couples in building their first home near Fleming Beach in Esquimalt – an ideal location for a newly-hired firefighter with the DND Fire Service. Over the next 35 years, Art progressed through the ranks of the fire department, while at the same time, serving 8 years as an alderman on Esquimalt council. During this period, he was Worshipful Master of Vancouver and Quadra Lodge, as well as being active with local Scout and Little League groups. However, it wasn’t until he retired that Art discovered his true callings – fine carpentry for family and friends, golf with the “Group of Twelve” and politics! These activities kept him challenged mentally and physically till he was well into his 80’s.
Art’s family thanks staff of the Lodge at Broadmead for their compassion and excellent care during his final years. There will be no flowers or funeral according to Dad’s wishes. Condolences and memories can be sent to gordonmebs@hotmail.com.

So very sorry Gordon to read about your dad’s passing. I did not know that you were from the Island. Tough time for this to happen, but we are thinking of you and wish you all the best. Did not know that you had moved to Qualicum Beach. As Qualicum has so many postal codes, I did not know where to send a condolence and Xmas card to you both. Please email us and let us know the postal code, and I will get the cards off. Now that we are a bit closer together, maybe we can get together during thesummer on our travels in our trailer. Really want to hear from you Robert, think of you often and miss you. Love, Kathie Larabie (Schumaker)

Grant, I didn’t know your father well although I’m glad to say that through you I did have the opportunity to visit hime at his house.
I recall you very well and am always grateful to you for your much appreciated assistance in bringing ‘Shropshire Lass’ from Vancouver after she had been brought out from Georgian Bay by rail. My sincere condolences on your sad loss
    Peter
