December 9, 1934 – June 12, 2010
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Brady. Mom was born in Calgary, Alberta, the only child of Hugh and Margaret Kitchen. Mom was fond of all animals in childhood, especially horses and had many friends and a close cousin, Vida McMillan. She spent wonderful summers at her paternal grandparents’ home in Escanaba, Michigan. As a teenager she attended Crofton House School in Vancouver, BC where she excelled at tennis. She later attained her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. She had great memories of working and living in Honolulu, Hawaii for a year as a young, single lady. Mom began her teaching career in Campbell River, BC and later taught elementary school here in Victoria. In 1965 she married Donald Brady and two daughters followed shortly after, Pamela in 1967 and Patricia in 1969. Due to rheumatoid arthritis Mom was no longer able to work but put her energy into keeping a beautiful home and raising her girls. Mom enjoyed summer sailing cruises, wonderful vacations and some of her best family time was spent during the “horsey years” when us girls were fully immersed in everything horse! She was a long-time member of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the University Women’s Club of Victoria. Sadly, with her arthritis worsening, Mom went into care at Berwick House in October 2000 and then Mount St. Mary Hospital in April 2007. Even with declining health Mom was able to enjoy a good game of bingo, the beautiful gardens at Mt. St. Mary and her favourite drink, rye and water. She was a very proud Grandma to Pam’s children and was always interested in their achievements and enjoyed their visits immensely. The last few years were difficult for Mom with failing health and loss of mobility, but she remained tenacious to the end. She will be missed by her daughters, Pam Stamper (Duncan) and Trish Brady, grandchildren, Jane, Abby and Tristan Stamper and her cousin Vida McMillan-McKay of Calgary. We would like to thank all the exceptional people who cared for Mom at Berwick House and at Mt. St. Mary Hospital (Humboldt House). Also, the support of Margaret Busby, Joan Wiggins, Karen Jones and Ruth Ewing. Mom is now at peace and reunited with her beloved parents and special Aunt Jess.
A private family service was held at McCall’s on Friday, June 18th.

After a year I hope the pain of loss is not so great

I think at this stage the best thing is that I post my query which seems answered.
I am looking for any descendents of Hugh & Lydia Neilson who lived in Calgary at the beginning of the 1900s. They had 2 daughters who married
Edna M married Arthur S Kitchen and appeared to go to Chicago. They had a son Hugh Neilson Kitchen who died in BC in 1981. He had one known daughter , Barbara.
Hugh Neilsons other daughter Jessie A married (in 1910) Frederick Elioda Currey /Curry a druggist in town They lived in Centre St
The reason for this search is that a friend has their family Bible which she found amongst her Mother’s belongings

    Dear Pam and Trish,
I am sorry to hear of your mother’s passing.
I remember her as a very beautiful woman who was very generous.
I still have a baby blanket that she gave me when Darin was born-I think it was a blanket that she had used for both of you. I will keep it for you if you would like it for your grandchildren.
    With sympathy, Mary.
