It is with great sadness that I inform you that my beloved and loving wife, Betty Jane, lost her fight with cancer on Sunday, September 12, 2021. We were together over forty years, and those years were filled with love, laughter, dogs and many adventures in Canada, Scotland, and abroad.

Betty was born and raised in Saskatchewan, the daughter of the late Margaret and Derril McLeod. She is survived by me, her husband Alex, her twin sister Heather and cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her older brother Malcolm.

Betty was vibrant and had an infectious laugh. There was never a dull moment with Betty. She had a quick wit and a fabulous sense of humour.

A woman of many talents and interests, Betty had several careers over her life, including teacher, Anglican deacon, and business woman. We spent several years in Scotland after our marriage and upon returning to Canada, happily settled in British Columbia (Victoria and Squamish). Betty enjoyed our many summers of cottage life with family and friends in Saskatchewan and the Cowichan Valley.

She was an enthusiastic and skilled sportswoman and enjoyed golfing and lawn bowling. She sang in several choirs and was a proud deacon of the Anglican Church for over 20 years. Betty cared deeply about people and her community and made many lives better with her presence.

She will be sorely missed.

Betty and I were supported by relatives and friends during her last months. We thank you for this.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 4, 2021, at 2 o’clock p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 930 Burdett Avenue, Victoria, BC.   Masks and social distancing are required for indoor public spaces at this time.  The Service will be livestreamed on https://www.christchurchcathedral.bc.ca/live

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Warmest condolences, Alex, with regrets for having let my concern for you both disrupt the serenity you and Betty so richly deserved in the quiet comfort of your lovely home.

Dear Alex: Thank you for your moving tribute to my dear friend and your wonderful wife, Betty. I shared a house with her- and Irene Carter – in Calgary over forty years ago and she left an indelible mark on my life. Her irrepressible sense of fun was never far from the surface, along with her unswerving loyalty and friendship. Even though the miles kept us apart over the years, her kindness when I, or anyone else, was in need was testimony to the depth of her care for others. You and all Betty’s family are, and will continue to be, in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all at this difficult time. Judie (Slater) Horrocks (Fuerteventura, Spain)

Dear Alex, I enjoyed yours and Betty’s friendship at Cedar Hill Links. Betty’s infectious laugh was so welcome and I remember her enjoying repremanding Chloe ( the dog) each time she saw her, for planting French kisses on her! Betty exuded joy. Carol and I loved her for that and the gifted way she was able to help us during Carol’s last days. Due to covid, I won’t be at the service, but my thoughts and prayers will be with you both. With love, Delaina

  • Irene Carter

Dear Alex, I send my deepest condolences and prayers on the loss of your beloved wife and my dear friend, Betty. Although Betty and I weren’t able to see each other over the past recent years, we were once roommates and very close friends when we both lived in Calgary. I am very saddened by her passing. Thank you for the deeply moving obituary which helped me see that the character of the vibrant, loving, amazing woman that I knew Betty to be many years ago was very much who she was throughout the rest of her life. Truly a life well lived! May you know God’s solace in the midst of your grief and that her presence continues with you in the love you carry for her.
