April 23, 1956 – August 15, 2009
Brent passed away quietly in his sleep at his home in Saanich. Predeceased by his father, David Huggins. He leaves his dear friend, companion and love, Joelene Heathcote; their sons, Ieuan (3) and Madoc (1 month); his mother, Meryl and brother, Craig. He will be remembered fondly by numerous other relatives and friends in Canada and the U.K. Brent lived his whole life in Victoria. He attended Oak Bay High School and the University of Victoria. For the past 22 years, he had worked for Airgas Canada Inc. as a gas applications representative. He was an avid sportsman and was particularly keen on the game of rugby which he played and coached for many years with the Castaway Wanderers Rugby Club. Fishing was another passion and he loved spending time at the helm of the “Wahoo Boy”. Although Brent had children late in life, his greatest happiness was his family, who gave him love and a sense of purpose.

There will be a private family memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart & Stroke Foundation of B.C., #107 – 1001 Cloverdale Ave., Victoria, BC V8X 4C9 or a charity of your choice.

Dear Meryl , Joelene , Craig and extended family.
I was beside myself when I heard the sad news.

I will always cherish many memories of Brent,,,
He had great sense of humor ,,, his “one liners ” always had me rolling over in laughter!
Brent was a true gentleman ( rare these days)
putting others first and would be there whenever you needed a helping hand.

I treasure the time he took my son fishing ( caught a salmon within 10 minutes!)
did you ever try Brent’s smoked salmon?
    yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmy!

I am truly blessed to have known Brent and greatful that the LORD took him peacefully.
I will continue to pray for comfort for the family and his young children.

May the PEACE OF THE LORD remain in your heart.
Cherish your loved ones as we never know when the LORD will take us home

    sincerely
    Louisa

I was completely shocked when I saw the notice in the paper. I had last seen and talked with “Huggy Bear” about two months ago and he was really looking forward to the birth of his second child. My deepest sympathies go to his famliy and friends. I first meet Brent when we all went to New Zealand on the Oak Bay Wanderers rugby tour in 1982. Brent was a inside center and pretty fast if you can believe it and hard to tackle . As his career went along genetics caught up and he found his true calling in the front row. I will really miss him and sharing his favorite shooter a “Rootbeer” wink wink. We will all miss the big guy and his enthusiasm for life. Long live Huggy!

  • Kevin, Diane and Christina Hughes

It is with heavy hearts we say good by to ‘Huggy’. We have so many wonderful memories of Brent. From early morning fishing trips, to drinks and good times on the patio of the house we co-owned with him. He also were blessed with Brent being the ‘Best Man’ in our wedding 19 years ago. Deepest sympathies to his Mom, Craig and Joelene and the kids. We will really miss him and we have lots of great memories.

It is with deep regret that we read of Brent’s passing. My husband and I both knew him from high school. Brent escorted me to our high school graduation. We will remember him as a kind and friendly person, very easy-going and always with a happy disposition. My husband, Spencer, saw and spoke with him frequently at Trotac Marine where they both shopped. We hope that his children will always know what a special person their father was.

It was with sorrow that I read of Brent’s passing. I knew Brent from Oak Bay High School where he escorted me to our high school graduation. I haven’t seen Brent for some years, but remember him as a kind, easy going and friendly person. Although I haven’t seen him for some time, I know the world will be a lesser place without him. My husband, Spencer Parker, saw Brent regularly when purchasing items at Trotac Marine when they both shopped. Our hearts go out to him, his family and his young young children.

I am so very, very sorry to hear of Brent’s sudden passing. I spoke with him the Thursday before he died and he was so happy. He was thrilled with his new son’s birth, his family and his future. He was as happy as I’ve ever known him. I’m just shocked and saddened. He was a very nice person, someone you’d be proud to call a friend, and someone I’ll remember forever. My deepest condolances to all his family and friends.

My sincere condolences for your loss. Knowing Brent for over 25 years through the castaways and his 22 years as a coworker. Many great memories of so many times he was able to put a smile on my face with his humor, be it at work, on his boat, or with a beverage in his backyard. I know talking with him his greatest joy over the past few years was his family. He will be sadly missed. My thoughts are with the family.

“Huggs” was a dear friend and neighbour for many years. The last time we saw him he was excited to share the news he would soon become a father once again. We were so saddened to learn about his passing – far too soon.

We have some great memories of Brent which we’ll cherish always, and want to extend our heartfelt condolences to Joelene and family during this very difficult time.

  • Mary Carlson

This is indeed a very sad time, both for the family and for all of us who were lucky enough to know Brent as a friend. I have many fond memories of Brent, and when I think of him, I always see him smiling that “I’ve got a funny secret” smile.

I hope someday to meet his little boys, and am somehow comforted that he still lives because of them.

  • Christine Morrison

To Mrs Huggins, Craig, Joelene and the children.
Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of my good friend Brent. Craig as you would know I have known Brent a long time and we had spent some great times together. He also helped me through some difficult times. But I will surely remember him with happy thoughts as the time we shared was mostly full of laughter. He will be missed by many many friends.
    God Speed Brent
    Love Chris (Morrison)

    To Brent’s sweetheart and kids………..
While Brent’s life was short, it was incredibly wide. He touched many lives and his joy for coaching CW rugby means that a little of him will remain with many of those he coached and mentored.
I recall seeing him a few years back, it had been awhile since we talked and he was over the moon at the arrival of Iuean. He recognized the challenge of parenting at an older age, but the joy in his eyes meant he was absolutely up for the challenge.
My thoughts are with you and Craig. May the memories you ahve of Brent comfort you at this difficult time.

    Kelly Mann

  • Tim Carlson

We are so very saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Brent. We will aways hold near to us many, many memories of days gone by … a glorious day on the boat, a cold, windy and rainy day clutching a beer on the rugby pitch, or sharing many a laugh, and sharing a tear. We will treasure these memories and hope during these very difficult times your memories of Brent will provide you with some comfort.
