Passed away peacefully in the loving company of family at 8:37 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2010. A professor of mathematics at the University of Victoria for 22 years, he was a devoted father and friend, an avid hiker, gardener, photographer and thinker. A busy man, Charles’ efforts were not in vain. Charles is survived by his daughter, Joline and two sons, Bertrand and Abraham; his ex-wife and dear friend, Joy and three grandchildren. Rest in peace, Charlie. I had always believed that we would manage to get together one last time. Frank

    Joy, Jody, Berti, and Abie:
I spent twenty some years having lunch with Chuck, Al, Gary, and Earl at Uvic. I remember many many conversations about almost anything but generally politics or spiritual questions. Chuch’s conversation always reflected his deep devotion to nature and the spiritual quest.
I write this personally but I like to think it is from all of the OLD LUNCH GROUP.

Charlie was my best friend at the University of Colorado in the 1950s. We did many climbs together and had many adventures in the mountains including a trip to the Cariboo Range and the Bugaboo Range in 1958. He was a big influence on my thinking which caused me to study philosophy. He was a remarkable person in many ways and I will greatly miss his emails and photos. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Dear Jody and family,my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time…Death is never easy no matter who, when ,where or how,it always gives us a wake up call to reality.Having lost two brothers in the last few years ,i know that some days will be harder than others and the thing that really helps me most are the wonderful memories of those we hold near and dear to our heart and soul.I was just thinking last week of Mt.Finlayson —i knew i had hiked up there once many years ago and i thought of your father chuck as he was called then. The three of us(CHUCK,JODY AND I) started the climb and before i knew it i was gasping for air just trying to keep up to your dad,i could not really carry on a conversation accept to ask are we there yet?Your Dad not once stopping for a rest and definately not out of breath just kept going strong-something as a teenager i was in awe of..No matter how big a mountain it just showed me that your dad was just as big and totally at peace with nature…God Bless Charles…i shall hike Mt Finlayson with you in my thoughts very soon.Dena
