As we swayed to the music

And held to each other

I fell in love with you

“Blossom” passed away at home in the loving arms of her life partner Don Gordon on April 16th, 2026, six days before their 52nd anniversary.

Cheryl’s beautiful smile revealed a joyous spirit and genuine kindness that warmed the hearts and souls of those in her presence. As a former co-worker mentioned, “’Cheryl had a Superpower of making you “feel seen” when she greeted you in passing’”.

Cheryl began her life journey in Weyburn, Saskatchewan on July 27, 1949, the only daughter of Joyce and Jim Prestie. From 1955 to 1957, Cheryl, younger brother Michael and their parents lived in Germany where Jim, a member of the Canadian Army, was stationed until returning to Weyburn. After Cheryl’s parents divorced, Joyce married Roy Stainbrook, and the family, including Roy’s son, Randy, moved to Salmon Arm, BC when Cheryl was 17.

In 1967, Cheryl graduated from Salmon Arm High School and moved to Calgary, Alberta to complete her Licensed Practical Nurse certification at Foothills Hospital. She later joined her brothers, mother, and stepfather at their new home in Vernon, B.C. where she met Don in 1974. Cheryl worked as an LPN at Dellview Hospital in Vernon until its closure, and in 1983 she and Don moved to Victoria, BC after Cheryl accepted a job transfer to Oak Bay Lodge. There she worked as an LPN and later as an Activity Worker in the Adult Day Care program until her retirement in 2004.

After retiring, Cheryl lived up to her nickname, Blossom. She became an accomplished SCUBA diver, blue water sailor, actress with the Victoria Operatic Society, professional soloist, and charitable fundraiser for several microcredit and school-building projects in Uganda and Tanzania. Much of this she accomplished in the years following a near-fatal encephalitis infection in 2009 which left her with irreversible cognitive deficits. Regardless, performing with other Victoria artists, brightening the lives of care home residents with her singing, and the philanthropic work she and Don did in their travels to Uganda and Tanzania filled her with purpose and were among her most treasured memories.

Cheryl was Don’s life partner and the light and love of his life. She is survived by Don, brother Michael Stainbrook, stepbrother Randy Stainbrook, her precious uncle Joe Zbeetnoff, and a myriad of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends too numerous to name but no less loved.

She was predeceased by her mother and stepfather, Joyce and Roy Stainbrook; uncles and aunts Stan and Elaine Walker, Bernice Zbeetnoff, Wes and Betty Marshall; stepbrother Royden Stainbrook; tragically at age 17, cousin Kaylee Kolenski; father and mother-in-law George (Scotty) and Doris (Do) Gordon; sister-in-law Val Pack; brothers-in-law Tom Gordon and Don Pack; and all too soon, niece- and nephew-in-law Cindy Gordon and Steve Pack.

Don would like to especially thank the teams at Baromedical Oxygen Clinic, Comfort Keepers Care Services, and the Palliative Response Team at Victoria Hospice for their respectful, tender, compassionate care of Cheryl during the final days of her life.

In lieu of flowers, please e-donate to CanUcare Canada Society at info@canucaresociety.ca or to a charity of your choice.

To support the work Cheryl loved, in November 2026 (TBA) there will be a charitable fundraiser in tribute to her life hosted by CanUcare Canada. CanUcare Canada is a registered, non-profit society founded by Don and Cheryl for the purpose of funding the work of Dr. Daniel Murokora https://afhiri.org/dr-daniel-murokora/ to reduce maternal and infant mortality in West Uganda through CanUcare Foundation Uganda.

Don, I am so sorry to read about Cheryl’s passing. Cheryl always had the largest smile on her face and was constantly laughing. Working with her at OBL was always an adventure and she taught me so much. It was great to reconnect with her and yourself at Broadmead, when Cheryl brought her music talent and enthusiasm to the residents. We have lost a truly remarkable woman, who will be missed dearly. You are in my thoughts Don. Please take care.

A bright and shining star may have left this world, but her light still shines for those who remember her.

Not sure what year Cheryl and I met, but it was at OBL. I have so many happy memories and am very glad our paths crossed. I was blessed to meet up with Cheryl at the Goldstream Fish Hatchery while we were both doing volunteer work there.

I will always remember Cheryl’s light as she truly was effervescent and radiated love and kindness right to the end of her mortal life. I have no doubt that continues behind the scenes now.
What an incredible blessing to have experienced so many years together. What a “power” couple is what I thought whenever I saw Don and Cheryl together. Power with Purpose! Such an incredible combination.
Don may you continue to feel the love and light you shared together and brought to many. Thank you for continuing with the charitable work that matters to you both. Your vast wisdom is so needed right now in the world.

I knew Cheryl for many years ,both personally and professionally. She was always a very vibrant and lovely person. She and her husband Don became members of the Goldstream Hatchery a number of years ago ,and it was always enjoyable to watch her fascination with every thing that went on. My wife and I also had the pleasure to listen to Cheryl sing at a few local venues, and it was always a delightful evening . She is missed by everyone who knew her .

  • Dave

Don you know I share your pain. Peace and light my friend.

  • Daniel Murokora

    Dear Don,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Cheryl’s passing. Fifty-two years of love and partnership is a rare and beautiful thing, and the joy, kindness, and “superpower” of making people feel seen and shining through every memory of her are a testament to the life you built together. Blossom touched so many lives, on stage, in care homes, and far beyond, and her warmth will not be forgotten. Please know that you are in our thoughts during this profoundly difficult time.
The charitable work Cheryl and you carried out in Uganda and Tanzania before provides a great foundation to start support for CanUcare whose efforts will reduce maternal and infant mortality in Western Uganda and will be a living legacy of her compassion, continuing to save and brighten lives for years to come.
    With heartfelt sympathy,
    Daniel
