September 19, 1986 – October 17, 2013

Daniel was born in Ottawa and passed away suddenly at the age of 27 in his beloved hometown of Victoria. He is survived by his parents, Jeremy Long and Marian Paris; brother, Alexander and Megan (Sinclair); their children, Everett and Chelsea, brother, Tristan and Alison Baumann. His 24 aunts and uncles and his 60 cousins in Victoria, Yellow Point, Denman and Hornby Islands, Vancouver, North Vancouver, Gibsons, Penticton, Calgary, Montreal, Halifax, Toronto, Portland, England and France will forever mourn his loss. We love him for his creativity, his love of heavy metal, Conan The Barbarian and animals. Dan had strongly held opinions, a ready wit and sense of humour, loving heart, compassionate ear and most of all, a warrior spirit. Dan was predeceased by his grandparents, Patrick and Kathleen Long and Roger and Betty Paris.

Dan founded the “Mad Funk Breakers” break dance troupe at age 11 and the heavy metal band “Dissident Aggressors” at 16. He attended Willows Elementary, Oak Bay High School and S. J. Willis. He was a fiercely proud Canadian and corresponded with Jean Chrétien. His fascination with the military began with Admiral Raynor Sea Cadets. In Paris, he chose to visit the catacombs instead of the Eiffel Tower. He smoked Belmonts, drove a Yukon and loved his pitbulls, Diedre and Meatball. His first sport was skateboarding. He loved wilderness camping and big fires. He skied and golfed. He caught his first fish at Anahim Lake in the Chilcotin. He hiked Cape Scott and the Juan de Fuca trails. He never did get a tattoo or a piercing. He wished he could grow a beard like his Dad. He loved Japanese food and bacon and eggs. He baked the best peanut butter cookies and cinnamon buns. He always needed a reminder to wash his own dishes. He worked in moving, shipping, plumbing, and construction. Dan was excited to start a new career on October 18 to learn to be a barista. His best friend, Cory Cox would have been his best man. He was a formidable opponent in Scrabble and Cribbage and loved crossword puzzles. He was curious to learn about the concept of God at a time when most kids his age were reading Dr. Seuss. He spoke authoritatively on a staggering number of self-taught subjects and could mimic dialogue from hundreds of episodes of The Simpsons and South Park. His last post on Facebook was “I wish girls would go back to wearing denim overalls with tank tops”. We hope Dan can get Book Six of Game of Thrones. He wished to have a Viking burial on a burning longship floating out to sea. The family is doing their best to accommodate Dan’s wishes.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 26, 1:00 – 3:00pm, at The Beach House, 5109 Cordova Bay Rd. To honour Daniel’s life, a donation to the Victoria Human Exchange Society or Our Place Society is gratefully suggested in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I was heartbroken yesterday, while walking in Ross Bay Cemetery, to come upon Daniel’s grave and realize for the first time the sad loss your family sustained nine years ago. I’ve been thinking about you ever since, so sorry for this unthinkable loss and for my unawareness. My heart goes out to all of you.

I have only just heard your shattering news. Good heavens, can there be any greater heartache in life than losing a child?

I never met your son, but know he must have been an extraordinary person having grown up in a family such as yours, and two such deep and wide parents.

Michael and I send all our love and warm, enveloping clouds of comfort.

    Grania.

Ah Marian, my friend. My heart aches for you and your family. If only we could find some reason, some logic, something to make your grief make sense. Perhaps we can focus on a gift those who leave us provide. The gift of understanding tomorrow is not a given, and from that painful understanding we appreciate more the fleeting opportunity we have to love those who remain. With time I hope the intensity of your grief will evolve in equal measure to your ability to live your life again to the fullest. That truly is a gift I know your beautiful boy would want for you.

My love and best wishes are with you.

    Michael

I don’t know where to start, Dan was a real Metallion, and with his metal breatheren he more than belonged. He was always more than supportive with the music that he deemed True.and Mighty. A path forged with Imagination and a will to match Crom. He will be missed but never forgotten. It was always an entertaining usually laugh filled day or even passing moment when Dan was around. I will miss him
