I have not met Don since around 1979 as our lives took separate paths, but he was a great friend through the school years. Don would always brighten the days. I remember quite well riding around in his old gray Austin something or other where the passenger seat wasn’t attached to the floor – It made sharp turns challenging. Also many shared experiences during band trips.

It was all fun for us “younger kids” growing up on Highrock Place, with bikes, skipping ropes, games of ‘Wiggle’ and ‘Kick the Can’…. and those older brothers teasing us all and chasing us silly. Don was one of those older brothers (along with Bill, Stephen Gregg, and Dave/ Doug/Frank Peters). Don was always the one, though, who teased the most and also had a quick wit for the crabby neighbour (no, Mr. Devlin, not you).
Over the years, though most of us have moved away, we always return to the cul de sac for visits and often see each other in town or at the grocery store or a local or family celebration.
I would see Donny often and he always had a smile, something nice to say, and some funny comment to my kids. He was one of the funniest people I ever knew. In fact, if my husband says something funny and I acknowledge it, he often says “am I funnier than Donny Broughton?” sadly, I always have to say “no”.
I know how immensely proud he was of his kids and was always excited to share with me their latest accomplishments and stories.
I know how attached he was to all of his family. I know how his sense of humour always endeared him to everyone.
    We will all miss him.
Our deepest condolences to all The Broughtons.
See you on another cul de sac, Donny, for a game or two.
    Rest in Peace.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Broughton Family. I had the good fortune of working for Don at McDonald’s. He was a great man with a quick wit. Don knew what really mattered in life and was a great example to many of us. He taught me that a kind word or a smile and a good laugh are what one should make a priority in life. I will miss you, Vern

I am saddened at the sudden passing of Don. I entered the dressing room on the 18, July, expecting to see Don there ahead of me as he usually was, dressed and ready to get onto the ice, and was very surprised to see he wasn’t there. I played hockey with Don during the winter months out at Bear Mtn. Arena and during the summer at the Raquet Club every Sunday evening. He was a pleasure to be around and a good team-mate and difficult to play against. He sure enjoyed playing the game of hockey. He recently shared with me how enjoying he was finding the work of putting in an ensuite in his home. I share condolences with those of his friends and loved ones. I will miss him greatly. I am certain we will meet again, Don. Bob

My sincere condolances to the Broughton family for their loss.
Don and I were the same age, I first met Don as a child at sunday school and liked him instantly, he was funny, and had a quick wit, our lives interconnected over the years, Memorial arena hockey, Macdonalds, Sinclairs, and Summer Sunday night hockey. That was where I admired him the most as the first one on the ice and last one off, the one who moved the nets for the zamboni, picked up the pucks after warm up, and one who always backed off on a play so as not to hurt anyone. He was a very good player, but more importantly a pleasure to be around, and he was held in high regard by his team mates and those of us that got to work with him in the HVAC industry. Rest in Peace friend.

I wanted to pass on my condolences on your loss. I worked with Don at McDonald’s and whenever we were having a bad day Don was always there to make light of the situation and cheer me up. His laid back attitude was something I always admired about Don and will miss him.

I first met Don in 1977 when I began working at McDonald’s Restaurants as a teenager. Over the next 10 years, I got to know Don (a.k.a. Vern) as a good friend. His sense of humour and quick wit kept many of us laughing. Even though we have lost contact over the years, I remember many great times with him at McDonald’s and staff events. Rest peacefully, my friend.
