September 27, 1925 – September 9, 2013

After a blessed and fulfilling life, our dear husband, father and grandfather, Don, passed away peacefully at Broadmead Lodge in Victoria.  Don is survived by his beloved partner and wife of 54 years, Anne, as well as son Doug (Joanne) and daughter Kathryn Dawson (Bob).  Don’s special grandchildren Megan, Erin, Ben and Janet will treasure their happy memories with their Grandad.

Don was born in Lethbridge, Alberta where he was raised with his brother Hector and sisters Kay and Eleanor.  At the age of 18 he joined the Army.  After the war he was able to attend the University of Western Ontario (he had seen the beautiful campus on route to his Army training camp).  While at Western, Don made many life-long friends and enjoyed a varied post-graduation career in Ottawa which  included CFL and MLB broadcasting as well as a stint at GMAC.  However, Alberta remained close to his heart and he moved back to Calgary where he became a successful Landman working for Amoco and Sun Oil before establishing his own company.

Don was an active member of the Glencoe Club where he enjoyed the fellowship of sport with many valued friends.  Don was a generous man and had a significant sense of community.  He volunteered with many service organizations including Rotary International and Kinsmen, in addition to serving as Chairman of the Woods Christian Home Board.  He was especially proud of his volunteer work at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

Don treasured his relationship with Anne which encompassed all facets of his life. They loved each other and being with one another.  They were keen golf and tennis players and traveled extensively, appreciating different cultures they encountered.  They also had a love of the mountains that included downhill skiing and hiking which they have imparted on their children and grandchildren.

In 2002, they moved to Victoria and continued to lead a busy and active lifestyle until Don’s illness incapacitated him in 2011.

Don was an honourable man and a gentleman.  He had his sense of humour until the end and was loved and respected by all.

A heartfelt thank-you to the amazing staff at Broadmead Lodge where Don spent the last year of his life.

A family memorial has taken place.  Donations in Don’s name may be made to the Lodge at Broadmead, care of 4579 Chatterton Way, Victoria, British Columbia, V8X 4Y7.
