(Dr.) Ian Blake Thomson (b. 1926) died peacefully on September 29, 2011 at the age of 85 in Victoria. Blake was predeceased by his beloved wife Nancy (of 55 years) in 2007 and sister-in-law Elsie in 2006. He is lovingly remembered by his 4 children Linda (Bill), Robert (Marney), Barbara and Kathryn (Sean); his 5 grandchildren Max, Jennifer, Liam, Serena and Sascha; and his brother-in-law (Dr.) Ian Stewart; and nieces and nephew Elisabeth, Alison and Lindsay.

Blake was born in Winnipeg and spent his early years in Winnipeg and Victoria before completing school and his medical degree in Glasgow. In Glasgow, he met and married Nancy. After marrying, they moved to Canada. Blake began his medical career in Manitoba where all 4 children were born.

The family moved to Victoria in 1965 and Blake began a psychiatric practice. Blake was well regarded in the medical community and, until his retirement in 1990, held various positions including Head of Psychiatry at Eric Martin Institute and President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1977-1978).

The family would like to thank the staff of Glengarry Hospital for the care they provided to Blake during his final months.

A funeral service will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel (Johnson & Vancouver Streets) on October 8, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow in the McCall’s Family Centre. Condolences for the family may be offered at www.mccallbros.com.

  • Dr Perry Lydon

It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of Dr Blake Thomson. Because of his long life he has had limited contact with the Department of Psychiatry during the past few years. I remember when he was the flagship of our Department, where he displayed the attitude of a real gentleman, the intelligence and wisdom of a true Professional, and a profound sense of concern for those patients under his care. He will be missed in Victoria, Canada as he will be missed in Glasgow, Scotland and the Medical Professiopn has lost one of its most stalwart practioners. In the old Gaelic tongue, we bid you goodbye -“slan agus Beannacht”..

  • Nancy, Gordon and Murray Hasick
