Edith McInnes of Victoria passed away in her sleep on the morning of August 5, 2011. Edith was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on June 29, 1919, the youngest of Richard and Mary Smith’s six daughters. Her parents were immigrants from Durham, England who came to Canada with three oldest daughters and settled in Winnipeg where Edith’s father found work as a motorman on the streetcars. The family lived in the West Kildonan section of Winnipeg. She married Bill McInnes in 1941. Bill was a carpenter and the practice of his trade required them to move often. They lived in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta before settling in Victoria, British Columbia in 1975. Edith and Bill had eight children – six sons and two daughters. After Bill’s sudden death on Boxing Day, 1975, Edith ably finished raising her youngest two children alone. She had three loves in life: her Lord, her husband and her family and she gave her life to the service of all of them. Although in her later years her memory grew increasingly foggy, she never forgot how to sing and how to laugh – gifts which she passed on to her children. She is predeceased by her husband Bill, her parents, her sisters and brothers in law – Mag and Tom Dixon, Doris and Fred Torrence, Gladys and Les Acheson, Edna and Ernie Shick and Albert Wolfe. Mourning her passing are Edith’s sister Mary Wolfe of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Edith’s children – son Alec of Calgary, Alberta, son Lorne and wife Donna of Paris, Ontario, son Dan and wife Helen of Gold River, British Columbia, son Richard and wife Charlotte of Sundre, Alberta, daughter Carol Straiton and husband Lynn of Victoria, British Columbia, son John and wife Denise of Kelowna, British Columbia, daughter Christine Wilson and husband Christopher of Duncan, British Columbia and son Joe and wife Tina of Victoria, British Columbia. She is also survived by her grandchildren – Doug, Kari and Polly, Lora and Ethan, Mark and Cassandra, Krista, Andrea and Ricki, Jen and Bob, Mike and Laura, Emilie and Ben and Brendon and Brett, her great grandchildren – Karliegh and Mackenzie, Amy-lee, Andrew, Tyler and Tim, Russell, Dalton and Alexandra, Cole and Mackenzie, Addison and Kemery, Nathan, Maggie and Sophia and Owen, CJ and Kaylee as well as her great-great grandchildren – Madison, Landon, and Cammeron and Sydney. Edith’s family invite friends to join with them for a service of worship and remembrance at Victoria First Church of the Nazarene, 4277 Quadra Street, Victoria, British Columbia at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 13, 2011. Together we will celebrate the life and faith Mom shared with us and find comfort in the love of the Lord Mom served throughout her long life. Edith’s family wish to thank Dr. Tom Bailey and the staff at Central Care Home who have lovingly cared for Mom during her declining years.

I was saddened to hear of Aunt Edith’s passing. What a wonderful & gracious lady who has left her family with an amazing legacy. Her smile says it all. She is with the Lord now and what a joyous reunion. My memories of your family go back many years when your visits to our home on Oakenwald Ave with the first sons, Alex, Lorne & Dan. And later as your family grew our contact was infrequent, but still meaningful. How I appreciated your Mom’s contact when our Mom (your Auntie Anne) passed away. I will always remember your Mom’s offer of a kind word, a quiet prayer, & a loving smile. My thoughts & prayers are with all of you today as you gather together to worship and reminisce.

I remember Aunt Edith as being a gracious and loving aunt. I still remember her lovely smile and her strong faith in the Lord and her love for all her children. She loved to laugh. When we visited Uncle Bill and Aunt Edith, there was always a houseful but I never saw Aunt Edith frazzled.
I remember her with a lot of love. She is home now with her beloved Lord. My mother Bonnie was Uncle Bill’s younger sister. My sincere condolences to all the family in the loss of their beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great- grandmother.
