Born in Armstrong, B.C. on December 13th 1919, son of Edgar and Cecil Hoover. He passed away peacefully on the afternoon of September 13th 2006, following a valiant struggle against chronic illness the last few years of his life.

El is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Martha, their two children Terrie (Brian) and Ed as well as grandsons, Brad and Dave and granddaughters, Crystal, Caroline and Jessica. He is also survived by his sister Ruth (John) of Lincoln, Oregon. He was predeceased by his older brother Robert.

El was raised in Armstrong, B. C. and moved to Vancouver in 1940. He joined the RCAF in 1943 to 1946. He was self-employed for most of his life, with his wife Martha at his side every step of the way. In his early years he worked in the logging industry, until illness led him to pursue a more entrepreneurial lifestyle. This included a successful taxi business and laundry/dry-cleaning business.

Together they built a retirement home on Mayne Island and lived there for 15 years where they were very active in community activities. Their many travels included a junkit to Europe for their 50th wedding anniversary. They also loved to go south for the winter, spending time with friends and relatives.

You could always find El with a hammer or screwdriver in his hand, always repairing or building something. He loved nature and was an avid reader on a wide range of topics including nature and historical events. El will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at 1:00 pm, at McCall Bros. Family Chapel, Vancouver & Johnson Sts., Victoria with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 750 Hillside Avenue, Victoria B.C., V8T 1Z4.
