March 22, 1920 – February 1, 2012

Eve, a 3rd generation Victoria resident, was born in the family home “Yaxley” in the Fairfield area and resided there for 88 years before moving to Somerset House in 2008.  She was the only child of William Henry and Gertrude Louise (née Blackwell) Lettice.

Eve was also known as Peggy, Evelyn, and “Lettice” during her school years. She attended Poplars School and was a graduate of St. Margaret’s School, Victoria College, and St. Margaret’s Business School.  Eve began employment at HMC Dockyard in December 1941, three days before the Pearl Harbour incident, at a time when there were only 9 ladies in clerical or steno positions. That situation rapidly changed in 1942.  After 36 1/2 years of employment at the Dockyard, HMCS Naden, and HMCS Malahat, Eve retired in 1978.

Eve always enjoyed sporting activities, including tennis, swimming, curling, golf, and figure skating.  She was a National Figure Skating judge and was an active golfer at Uplands Golf Club for 50 years. In her retirement, travel took her all over the world and gave her many unforgettable and cherished experiences.  At home, Eve delighted in her vegetable and flower gardens and enjoyed the affection and high regard of her Fairfield neighbours.

Eve wished to thank Dr. Houston, Gordon Banta, Marilyn Jessen, Royal Jubilee Hospital, and Dr. DeMott for all their attention, love and support.

A Funeral Service, followed by a reception, will be held at McCall Bros. Funeral Home, Vancouver & Johnson Streets, at 1:00 pm, Tuesday February 7th. Condolences to the family may be offered below.

To Eve’s Family & Friends, I am very sorry that I was unable to attend the service for Eve yesterday. I do remember her at St. Margaret’s School, I was 3 years her junior. Then of course, we used to meet at the Old Girls lunches. We always had good talks and laughs. She was a very nice friend. Thinking of you all in your loss.
    Sincerely,

    Sheila Page

I first met Eve fifty years ago when she flew into Penticton to judge skating tests for my pupils. Then forty six years ago I moved here to teach at the Victoria Figure Skating Club. This was Eve’s Club and I got to see first hand all the many volunteer duties she participated in. She was a great National Level Skating Judge and a friend to everyone. To her family and close friends please accept my condolences.

I think I must be some sort of cousin. My aunt Ruby Jenkins of Sussex (UK) used to write regularly to Evelyn, and I believe they met when Evelyn visited the UK. There was another cousin called Elwyn who lived in London, whom they attempted to meet.
I am guessing that one of Evelyn’s parents was a brother or sister of one of my grandparents. Granddad was William George Jenkins of Clapham, grandmother was Hetty Lavinia Jenkins, nee Foster. There are many more cousins here in UK.
I guessed Evelyn was ill, as we used to exchange cards and letters at Christmas, and I did not hear from her this time.
I am sorry she has gone – I hope it was peaceful.
    Yours
    Valerie Moyses, nee Jenkins

I only knew Eve for a short while and I very much enjoyed her company. She was a delightful, lovely, intelligent lady. I will miss her presence.
