“Eddie”, as he was affectionately known by his friends, died peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C. on August 25, 2011.

Eddie was born on August 11, 1927 in Glashütte, Upper Silesia, Germany, the youngest of seven siblings (Gerhard, Karl, Ilse, Hilde, Alfred, Herbert). Ed is predeceased by his wife of thirty-two years, Gertrude, in 1988 and is survived by his daughter Ruth, son-in-law Abby, cherished grandchildren Alycia, Anna and Aaron, his dear partner Lotti, and many other close relatives and friends.

Eddie apprenticed as a welder at Hennigsdorf Berlin, Germany during the war years, and by the time he applied to come to Canada in 1951, he was already a journeyman. Holding A, B, and C Welding tickets, his prolific skills in Oxy-Acetylene and Arc-Atom welding took him to the Alberta pipelines and numerous B.C. projects, including the Ocean Falls Pulp Mill, the Kemano Power Station, and to Malaspina College in Nanaimo as its first welding instructor. Throughout his professional career, Eddie was a member of the Boiler Makers Union of Victoria, Local 191.

One of Eddie’s many trade stops was in Victoria, where he met and fell in love with Gertrude “Gertie” Glashuettner of Mödling, Austria. He married Gertie in 1955, and they had a daughter Ruth soon after. The family eventually settled in Victoria, where Eddie found work with Nicholson-Murdie Machines, Limited for over thirty years until he retired in 1989. An avid soccer fan, Eddie played semiprofessional soccer in Germany, and was coach of the Victoria Kickers in the late 1960’s and mid 1970’s. As a founding member of the Victoria Edelweiss Club in 1970, many weekends were spent both volunteering his labour skills, and sharing laughter over a beer with good friends. The last 23 years of his life were spent with his devoted partner Lotti, travelling extensively, sharing her great cooking, and visiting friends.

A celebration of Eddie’s life will be held on Friday Sept. 2, 2011 at Lambrick Park Church, 1780 Feltham Road, Victoria B.C. at 1 pm. Interment procession will follow after the service to Royal Oak Cemetery, and reception for family and guests afterwards.

    Dear Ruth,
I am so sorry to have heard of Eddie’s passing last year. I just wanted to touch base and offer my condolences. I remember him as a very kind man and always enjoyed the time we spent with your family. My mom always spoke so highly of him.

All the best to you and your family,

    Janice Glaves Kutner

    Ruth,
Thinking of you, other family and friends at this time.

I lived at 231 St Andrews Street for years; your Mom and Dad lived 2 doors away (Judy lived in between). Once your Dad moved to Rithet Street I did not see him all that often but our paths did cross.
When Roswithe and Herbert came to visit his Mom and needed a place to stay hey would stay at The W – on St Andrews Street.
I saw your Dad in June when they were here; he looked so lively – his usual cheerful positive self.

This is an overwhelming shock. Was not able to stay very long after the service today. It was a most pleasing service.

Our deepest condolences to Ruth, Abby and family, Eddie’s passing was a shock to us as it must have been to all of you. We still have a hard time with the idea that Eddie is no longer with us and we were planning to see Lotti and Edie soon. We sure will miss Eddie even so we are a long distance from Victoria but every ones in a wile we talked to him and when we come to visit he was a great host the time we spent in Victoria.
We met Eddie thru Lotti here in Santa Barbara when they came to visit and some other time we ask them to sit our house when we went on vacation to Germany. Eddie was a very nice and gentle man, always helpful and as I hear now volunteering for the German community.
It all makes good sence, this was Eddie.

May God bless you all. Ria & Andy Eggendorfer
