1926 – 2013

Passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. Beloved husband of Virginia; dearly loved by children, Arthur (Louise), Shelley (Rod), David (Diane) and Nicki (Patrick); his grandchildren, Tyler, Natalie (Chris), Robin, Nicholas, Heather, Brendan, Charlotte, Brenden and Virginia. Also survived by his sister, Frances Cammiade and her three children. A native son of Victoria, George was owner operator along with his sons of A.H. Winter & Son Construction Ltd. His work took him all over the island and to parts of Northern B.C. Known for his gregarious nature, he made many friends everywhere he worked. As a charter and honorary life member of the Capital City Yacht Club, he enjoyed cruising the inland waters aboard the Lodestar. In later years, he spent many happy days at his cabin on Mesachie Lake with his family. The family is grateful for the kindness and support from Hospice Community Health Workers, Red Cross and friends.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at McCall’s Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets with a reception to follow at the home of George and Virginia Winter.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Victoria Hospice or the Red Cross would be appreciated.

Dear Art & Shelley….Just now finding out about your loss. Peace be with you. My fondest memories, are of hot summer days spent at Art Sr & Bessie’s cabin on Langford Lake with my Pops (Winter) and your family. Don’t know if you remember but, my Pops and Art Sr. were best buds for years! The photo posted here, of your Dad, and the resemblance to Art Sr. (as I remember him), is totally uncanny! Always remember the good times. Art & Shelley, (and family) I wish you all well.

I am sorry for your loss. George was a ray of sunshine and a very kind person. I worked for John Congdon at the Royal Scot Hotel and every time George came in to see Mr. Congdon or pick him up to go for lunch he brought good cheer. I know he will be missed by many people.

Thinking of you in this time of sorrow.

Sincerely: Bob and Gladi Lyall, Comox, B.C.
