October 17, 2026

Gord Liebscher passed away on October 17, 2026, following a brief but difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.

Gord was a humble, unassuming man whose quiet demeanour belied his remarkable intellect, athletic ability, determination, and strong sense of character. He was someone who could turn his hand to almost anything and, once he set his mind to a task, would see it through to completion—sometimes with an almost obsessive determination. He approached life with a combination of intelligence, capability, and quiet perseverance that earned him the respect and admiration of those around him.

A superior athlete throughout his life, Gord excelled at virtually every sport he tried, including tennis, squash, racquetball, hockey, karate, football, and lacrosse. In later years, he took up western and Latin dancing as well as Argentine Tango and golf. His many trophies from his younger days were a testament to his athletic accomplishments. He remained remarkably fit and active, enjoying hiking with his sons and friends, cycling whenever he could, and spending many happy hours fishing during his younger years.

Gord had a competitive streak, too. Whether playing sports or sitting down for a game of chess, he had a knack for winning by just enough to keep the challenge alive. Those who played against him were never quite sure whether he was holding back or simply that good. Either way, the games, the friendly rivalry, and the laughter that accompanied them became treasured memories.

Beyond his athleticism and intellect, Gord was known for his generosity, loyalty, and kindness. He was a wonderful friend who made time for others, whether they needed advice, encouragement, or simply someone who would listen. He had a gift for making people feel supported, and he encouraged those around him to try new things and embrace experiences they might otherwise have avoided. Growing up, Gord and his brother Hugh always made time for the children in their neighbourhood, teaching them sports and sharing their enthusiasm. Those early acts of kindness left a lasting impression.

Gord also had a practical and resourceful side. He loved garage sales and finding a bargain so much that he sometimes came home with multiple copies of things he simply could not resist buying. Although thrifty with his own spending, he was generous with family and friends, and especially with his two grandchildren, for whose education he provided thoughtful support. In the kitchen, he was creative and adventurous, most recently experimenting with different variations of sourdough bread. Coffee outings with friends, long walks, good conversations, and the occasional competitive game were among the simple pleasures he cherished.

For nearly 30 years, Gord shared his life with his devoted partner, Terry. Their relationship was a central and cherished part of his life, and he was deeply devoted to her and they brought out the best in each other. He was fortunate to have many strong friendships and also took immense pride in his family, particularly his two sons, Ryan and Grant, and their families.

Gord is survived by his sons, Ryan, his wife Sumi, and their daughter Anjali; and Grant, his wife Melissa, and their daughter Lexi. He is also survived by his devoted partner, Terry, and his brother, Hugh, along with Hugh’s family, Linda, Kevin, and Heather.

Gord’s final illness progressed quickly, and he passed away surrounded by the love of those closest to him. Even during his last weeks, he retained much of the spirit that defined him, continuing to spend time with friends, share coffee and conversation, and enjoy their company.

Gord leaves behind a remarkable legacy—not one defined simply by his sporting achievements or personal accomplishments, but by the friendships he nurtured, the generosity he showed, the people he encouraged, and the pride and love he had for his family. He was a man who did not need to draw attention to himself to make a lasting difference.

He will be remembered for his intelligence, athleticism, determination, quiet humour, generosity, and unwavering loyalty. Most of all, he will be remembered with affection by the many people whose lives he touched.

Gord will be deeply missed, but he will live on in the stories shared, the laughter remembered, and the countless good memories he leaves behind.
