The chapters of history are often marked by what they call great-men, and when I look back at our own families’ history, Gurbax Nanaji was a man who stood as a pillar of humility, resilience, and courage. Much more than himself, he founded a legacy that continues to inspire the next generation. In this moment of grief, I look back at all the memories we will forever cherish & the character of integrity Gurbax Nanaji embodied. You will be deeply missed by us all.

    Rest in Paradise

    My dear friend Gurbax
It is very sad that I cannot be there in person but I’m saying goodbye to Gurbax, a friend of the heart. Our journey began in the village of Laroi, where we both born one week apart and shared our first days at primary school. Even as a young boy, Gurbax showed the resilience that would define his life, losing his mother early but being raised into a good man by his loving sisters and his resilient grandmother, “Maa Banti”
We were teenagers together, skipping classes to watch Kabaddi matches and movies, simply enjoying the freedom of youth. Though life eventually took us to different corners of the world, him to Canada in 1979 and me to Australia in 1985. Distance was never a match for our friendship. Whether he was driving from Victoria to Seattle to pick me up, or visiting me in Sydney despite his health, he always made the effort.
Gurbax was a fearless, honest, and genuine soul. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a reliable brother who put family above all else. We were just planning our next trip to India together, but God had a different plan. Gurbax, you were taken too early, but you and your friendship will always be with me. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

Hey Uncle, I’m going to miss you old friend. Thanks for showing us a great childhood, will never forget the fireworks at the old house. We had some great and funny conversations over lunch at your favourite places. Although it is a tragedy you’re gone, it would have been a bigger tragedy not knowing you at all. Shine bright.

Family isn’t defined by blood, but by love and Gurbax Uncle was the truest example of that. More than just an uncle he was my dads best friend. I will never forget the endless memories we had. Your kindness and love will never be forgotten.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Devvy’s passing. My heartfelt condolences to Surjit, Nav, Kiran, and the entire family.

I first met Devvy about 25 years ago, shortly after I had built my home around the corner from him. He came by and asked if he could wash my windows. That simple introduction began a friendship that lasted ever since. Not long after, he invited my wife at the time and me for dinner at his home — a gesture that spoke volumes about the kind of man he was: warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind.

Over the years, he continued to clean my windows, but more importantly, he remained a steady and valued friend. I remember when he fell from a ladder and injured himself. Even though I know it set him back significantly, he handled it with remarkable strength and determination. He showed that same resilience again when facing challenges with his kidney. Just this past Christmas, when he was at my home cleaning windows, I was so happy to see how well he was doing. His perseverance was truly inspiring.

Devvy spoke often and proudly of his daughters and his grandchildren. It was clear they were the center of his world and his greatest joy. His face would light up whenever he talked about them. He was deeply proud of the women his daughters had become and absolutely cherished his grandchildren.

And behind it all was Surjit — his devoted partner. The love and respect he had for his wife was evident. Together, they built a life grounded in hard work, family, and commitment. That foundation is a testament to both of them.

Devvy was a hardworking man, but more than that, he was a good man — steady, resilient, and devoted to those he loved. He will be deeply missed. The world is already a lesser place without him in it.

With sincere sympathy and warmest condolences to your family.
