VAIO, HAROLD Gurney (Jack) died in Saanich Peninsula Hospital April 29, 2003 after a short , valiant battle with cancer. Jack was born in Victoria September 6, 1916, the youngest son of Victoria pioneers, Ernest and Bessie Ray Vaio. He was predeceased by Dorrie, his wife of 53 years in 1996. He is survived by his brother, Lloyd, Nanaimo; his beloved daughters, Judy Chamberlain (Walt) and Shirley James (Doug Ware); granddaughter, Gina Kueber (Mark) and grandson, James Chamberlain; great grandchildren, Joseph, David and Meghan Kueber; step-daughter, Angela James and step-great grandson, Dayton James; sister-in-law Bette Whitcutt (Delta), nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Jack attended Oaklands Elementary and Victoria High Schools. During WWII, Jack worked at Naden in the decoding room. Later he worked at the Empress Hotel and finally as Property Manager at Brown Bros. for over 30 years.

Jack was a respected member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, Vancouver & Quadra # 2, past District Deputy Grand Master; Past Associate Guardian, International Order of Job’s Daughters; member of the Scottish Rite; co-founder of the Job’s Daughters – DeMolay Temple Society; Masonic Temple Association and one of the founding members of and former directors of the CeePee Credit Union.

Jack was a strong, caring man who put his family first and would help anyone at anytime. This past winter he especially enjoyed David’s minor hockey games.

A service of remembrance will be held at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Graham and Torrey McCall Family Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.
